Former Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye is concerned about the Black Stars defense ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The West Africa powerhouse has been in dismal form in recent form, conceding numerous goals in their last four games.

In an interview with Footballghana.com, the former towering guardsman expressed disbelief in the Black Stars defense and has therefore called for an urgent solution before the start of the tournament.

“We are in same group with Egypt and you can see some experienced players in their team. Honestly, I’m not happy with our defense and if we are unable to work on them it will be difficult for us to contain the likes of Mohammed Salah” he said.

Dan Quaye explaining how the Black Stars can excel at the continental tournament in Ivory Coast asserted the need for the experienced players to pass on their knowledge to the young players in the team.

“Experience is key in everything. To me, there should have been places for Mubarak Wakaso, Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful and Frank Acheampong. They have played to the highest level and have what it takes to deliver with the national team”

Ghana are placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars will be competing for the title in neighbouring country, Ivory Coast next month as the search for a fifth AFCON title continues.

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA has canceled initial plan to camp in South Africa and will now stage their preparation for the tournament in Kumasi.

The Black Stars have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.
