At Copper Wellness in Chicago, patients get to explore a variety of holistic treatments for their health concerns, such as acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medicine. Acupuncturist Dr. Madden helps patients with a variety of health conditions, such as anxiety and mood disorders, depression, trauma, behavioral problems, pain, fertility and reproductive health, sleeping problems, sexual health, migraines, headaches, and much more.

Why are you one of the top acupuncture providers in Chicago, IL?

There are many great acupuncturists in Chicago, which is wonderful. There are a few things that make mypractice stand out. First, I spend a lot of one on one time with my patients.

My practice, Copper Wellness, is built to allow me to see patients one at a time which truly allows me to be completely present with my patients.

Secondly, I work with patients to create integrative treatment plans among multiple providers. This is more than a referral system, it is understanding how the acupuncture treatment you are receiving from me works with everyone one else you are working with. Also, I make a point to speak with all other medical providers my patients are seeing, and build relationships.

Lastly, I was fortunate enough to earn my doctorate from AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine in Austin, Texas. I feel like my doctoral studies in clinical practice truly sets me apart from other doctoral programs in Chicago which are online based instead of working with patients in clinic.

How long have you been practicing acupuncture in Chicago, IL?

I have been practicing acupuncture for 5 years, 3 years in Chicago, IL.

What is your specialty in acupuncture?

My specialty in acupuncture is somatic events, emotional imbalances, trauma, and physical pain. Somatic events are when an emotional event, drawn out emotions, or trauma causes a physical response or vice versa.

Example: A patient has a close family member pass away and since then has been unable to sleep.

Example: A patient was in a car accident, broke their arm, and has been depressed since the event.

I work with patients to first identify the pattern, separate the emotions from the physical symptoms, and then treat them both. Somatic events can be hard to identify, so if you think this may be you but you are not sure, set up a consultation at Copper Wellness, and we can discuss it further.

What is acupuncture exactly and how can acupuncture in Chicago help me with my health concerns?

Acupuncture is the insertion of acupuncture needles into the body to create a healing effect. Acupuncture is a great start or addition to any wellness routine because it helps bring the body back to homeostasis, regulates the nervous system, releases endorphins, increases oxytocin, help encourage proper circulation and so much more. Not to mention acupuncture feels amazing.

What is one thing you want patients to know about acupuncture & East Asian Medicine?

A lot of people have heard of acupuncture but have not tried it, give it a try. It might seem “weird” or outside of your comfort zone but the benefits are endless.

Also, anyone that does not have an actual license, not a certificate, a license in acupuncture and is not a NCCAOM diplomat should not be giving you acupuncture. There are a lot of safety issues with other professions trying to use “dry needling” in their practice.

What kind of benefits will I get from acupuncture treatment?

? Regulating your nervous system.

? Your body start to remember that it can be calm, it likes to be calm, and will continue to be calm after treatments.

? Decreased Pain.

? Acupuncture releases natural endorphins stronger than morphine.

? Feeling happy.

? The increase in oxytocin and other neurotransmitter makes patients feel happy and connected which is equally important to our physical and emotional health.

? Regulating Organ Systems.

? Acupuncture can have a direct impact on your organ system so any internal issues such as GI problems, Cardiovascular, Adrenals, Respiratory and more can be addressed with acupuncture.

? Hormone Regulation.

? Acupuncture is a great way to regulate your hormones, whether you are trying to conceive, increase libido, or just feel better, acupuncture can help.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture sessions in Chicago, IL?

I accept insurance and verify patients coverage before their first treatment with me.

How much does acupuncture cost in the Chicago area?

I charge $145 for the first appointment and then work with packages and payment plans for the treatment if patients are not using their insurance.

How do I know acupuncture is working?

You will feel better! I spend a lot of time with my patients interviewing them and taking notes so we can review the progress together.

How long does it take for acupuncture to start working?

Acupuncture starts working immediately. However, it’s not magic. For chronic issues you will see an impact quickly but it does take time to change any pattern. The more intense the pattern is or the longer it has been occurring the more time it takes to change.

How long do the benefits of an acupuncture session last for?

After your treatments, patients tend to feel euphoric for the rest of the day. The following days patients will continue to feel the calming effects on the body. After completing your treatment plan some issues are resolved for a lifetime, others will need maintenance.

How long do the needles stay in?

Typically needles stay in for 20 – 30 minutes while the patient is resting.

How should I prepare for my first acupuncture appointment?

Make sure you are not hungry walking into the session, besides that just come as you are.

What can I expect at my first acupuncture appointment?

The first appointment is 90 minutes. We will start with reviewing your chief complaint, or in other words, what is the main purpose of your visit. Then, we will review your entire medical and emotional history.

After gathering all the information for your case, I will set a treatment plan in place which includes the frequency of treatments needed to help you achieve your goals. Finally, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment which takes about 30 minutes.

If you could give a me three reasons to try acupuncture…what would they be and why?

First, acupuncture can only help or do nothing! You really have nothing to lose by giving it a chance.

Second, acupuncture feels amazing, there are countless benefits but honestly one of the best is it just feels great and people love to feel good.

Third, this is a beautiful ancient medicine that has been an effective form of treatment for a variety of alignments before there was allopathic medicine and the cultures that embrace acupuncture are thriving and have less health issues than their counterparts.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The quantity of acupuncture treatments will be determined during your first treatment after assessing the situation.

How do I choose the right acupuncturist in Chicago, IL?

I would definitely recommend doing a consultation before committing to any acupuncturist. It is an intimate relationship and it is best to see if you feel truly comfortable with the practitioner to make sure this is the right person for you to go on this journey with. Also, read reviews!

Are there any side effects of treatment?

Yes, patients tend to feel euphoric after their acupuncture treatments. I like to call it “AcuHigh”. People always leave feeling more physically and mentally relaxed.

Do the needles hurt?

No, the needles do not hurt however you can feel them. Some needles will produce a dull and heavy sensation. This is a great communication between the needles and your body.

Outside of your acupuncture practice, Copper Wellness, what are some hobbies/activities you enjoy doing, and your sources of inspiration?

Outside of my practice I have a real love for houseplants. I am always taking care of my plant babies, propagating and buying more!
