Areas of Wilmington to Stay
Wilmington is a larger city than what you may expect, with a population of 120,000 people. It can take over an hour to get from point to point, depending on time of year and traffic. And trust me when I say that traffic can get horrendous in Wilmington. It’s important to research what all you plan to do in Wilmington so you ensure you stay in the right part of town. There are three main areas of Wilmington to stay in:
Downtown Wilmington: The best hotels in Wilmington are located downtown. Downtown Wilmington can be described as anywhere along the Cape Fear River. From Water Street back to 16th Street is all “Downtown” Wilmington, though you’ll want to stay as close to the river as possible. This also gives you access to Front Street and all the amazing restaurants. On the Coast: This can generally be described as anywhere on Wrightsville Beach, though many hotels in the Mayfaire Area, miles away from the actual beach, still label themselves as “Wrightsville Beach.” Pay attention to this while booking, as just because it has “Wrightsville Beach” in the name, does not mean it’s actually on the beach (on anywhere near it, for that matter!). Everywhere in Between (Wilmington Proper): Most Wilmington Business Hotels are between the beach and Downtown.
