With spring on the horizon and shifting seasons, we share the best places to visit in March. It is a fantastic time to travel, even if most of North America’s weather may not be the most inspiring time of year. Destinations such as Costa Rica, The Philippines, Jordan, Egypt, Banff, and India have ideal weather in March.

There’s a lot more to explore than the traditional beach destination. Granted, if you’re searching for a beach destination, you are spoilt for choice. Travelers can find everything they want, from warm sunny beaches to cultural capitals, snowy mountains, and historic sites. There is no bad time of year to travel, and it only depends on the destination. You can read more below about where to travel in March!

The Best Places to Travel in March

The Galapagos

Natasha Taking Photographs In The Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands are the ultimate bucket list-worthy travel experience and one of the best places to visit in March! The amount of wildlife you can see on the relatively untouched islands is fantastic. That’s just what’s on land, as when you step off the gorgeous islands, you’ll find deep blue Pacific water abundant in marine life.

It’s a place unlike any other on earth, and it’s easy to understand how the islands inspired Charles Darwin. March falls in between the countries’ warm and wet seasons. The warm season means higher precipitation, lush vegetation, warmer temperatures, and vibrant sunsets. It’s a great time to visit, though the Galapagos wildlife can be seen year-round.

Japan

Japan has a wide range of climates, and just like travel destinations, travelers can find anything they want in March. At the start of the month, the ski season remains strong in Hokkaido while the warm waters are warm, and the sun is strong on the beaches of Okinawa. It’s also a great time to visit busy tourist destinations such as the thriving metropolis of Tokyo or the temple-rich cultural city of Kyoto.

The end of March also marks the start of the sakura season, cherry blossoms, which begins in the southernmost parts of Japan. Even if the warmer beaches aren’t beckoning you, the country’s numerous onsens and hot springs are a welcome source of warmth on a chilly day. Head to Niseko on the island of Hokkaido to catch the last of the country’s epic ski season.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is also a green powerhouse, one of the most amazing natural destinations in the world. It was the first country to go a full year on 100% renewable energy and still operate at around 99%. The country has prioritized preserving its natural habitats, with large swaths of protected wilderness zones or national parks. As home to some of the world’s lungs with rainforest

With cheap and direct flights from the US, visitors can take in a plethora of wildlife, stunning coastlines, and pristine rainforests. It’s little wonder why Costa Rica has become a hot travel destination in the last decade. Getting into the “Pura Vida” lifestyle is easy, thanks to the gorgeous beaches, friendly locals, and stunning natural landscapes.

March is the perfect month for visiting Costa Rica because of the reliable weather. It brings sunny days on the country’s Caribbean and Pacific Coasts and is still very much the dry season (or what locals call Verano, which means ‘summer’).

Jordan

The End of Day At Petra In Front of The TreasuryPetra / Best Places to Visit in March

March in Jordan means springtime, which adds a splash of greenery to the country’s otherwise arid landscapes. The country’s valleys fill with wild brush and flowers that roll over the surrounding hills around cities such as the capital, Amman. It’s spring across most of the country, with mild temperatures perfect for sightseeing.

Jordan is a country that has been drawing travelers for over a century. It’s even the setting for my favorite travel movie, Lawrence of Arabia. The movie paints a vivid portrait of the country’s Bedouin culture and desert landscapes — visitors can still experience it in the popular region of Wadi Rum.

It’s not only the Bedouins who have left their mark on Jordan, as the country is rich in historical sites from the Romans, Edomites, and Israelites. Most notable is Petra, one of the world’s most spectacular sites and one of the New Seven Wonders of The World. After all of the exploring, no spot is better to unwind than floating in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea.

Sri Lanka

Head to the vibrant island nation of Sri Lanka for a heavy dose of culture, food, beaches, jungles, and history. March is a beautiful month to visit Sri Lanka as it falls between its two rainy seasons and experiences warm temperatures. Sri Lanka is well known for its hospitable people, tasty food, and unique landscapes.

A very popular time to go to Sri Lanka, March sees some pretty fantastic weather. With nine hours of sunshine daily, it’s the last month before the rainy season starts and the peak season for visitors. Humidity levels, however, begin to soar towards the end of the month as temperatures hit 30°C across the island.

Another great month for hitting the beach. The sea is blissful at 29°C. Kite surfing is good at this time of year, particularly on the northwest beaches of Kalpitiya. Want to escape the heat? Kandy is still pretty cool by comparison. Sri Lanka is a great destination to combine with the Maldives, just below, as they’re a short flight apart.

Maldives

Natasha Walking To Rooms On MaafushivaruThe Maldives / Best Places to Visit in March

The series of coral atolls spread across the Indian Ocean is an enticing getaway with white sand beaches, turquoise water, and tropical weather. The water here is home to abundant marine life so diverse that snorkelers can rejoice in close encounters with rays, sharks, whales, and a dizzying number of fishes. To make it only better, some of the world’s most luxurious resorts sit on top of these atolls with indulgent water villas and beach bungalows.

March is still very much in the dry season in the Maldives. However, it is the hottest month of the year. Temperatures are in the low 30s, and the sea remains warm at 29°C. Even temperatures at night time rarely dip below 27°C. But there’s barely any rain, with an average of seven rainy days in March in the Maldives. So you can rest assured knowing you’ll have sunny skies and likely an air-conditioned room for a midday retreat.

Though hot, it’s an excellent time to get out and about. It’s still a great time to walk around the islands, surf, read, or dive. Our biggest tip is to be mindful of sun exposure and wear plenty of sunscreen. Life on an atoll can provide dangerously high levels of UV exposure.

The Philippines

Drone Shot Of The Blue Lagoon Near Siargao In The PhilipinesSiargao / Best Places to Travel in March

The dry season in the Philippines begins in December and runs to May, making March a great time to visit the Philippines. With little rainfall, blue skies, and warm weather, you can have a great beach vacation here during March. The Filipinos are central to any trip to the Philippines. They remain the most outgoing, welcoming, and friendly people in all our travels. They can make some awesome food, too!

The only downside is the high temperatures and long days, so pack sunscreen and a hat to keep the sun off your face. Diving, however, is fantastic during March. A fantastic place to head for diving with the sardine balls is Moalboal. If you’re a surfer, consider heading to the stunning island of Siargao.

The Canadian Rockies

A Snowy Lake Louise In Banff National Park In The WinterBanff in March

It’s impossible to write this list of the best places to visit in March and not mention our beautiful home. The Canadian Rockies are stunning year-round, but they are great to visit in March if you are into skiing or snowboarding.

While March may bring about warmer conditions and spring skiing in many other destinations, things are still strong in the Rockies. March brings consistent snowfall still, and it’s very cold. That’s a good thing, though – we don’t want our precious snow to melt from warm temperatures!

If heading to the ski resort is not your thing, there is still plenty to do in Banff National Park in the winter. Hop on a dog sled, tackle gorgeous cross-country trails, learn how to snowshoe, or spot the Northern Lights – if you’re lucky. You can do all this while taking in some of the most gorgeous landscapes.

Idaho

Silver Mountain, IdahoWho doesn’t love a nice pitch, powder, and trees?

If you’re seeking a winter destination in March, consider the US state of Idaho. Most people look at Colorado or north of the border in Whistler when thinking about a ski or snowboard holiday, but Idaho is where it’s at. When we traveled to Idaho looking for great ski resorts, we had no idea what to expect. Little did we know we were about to get some of our best powder days of the season in Northern Idaho.

The best part? Almost no crowds! Since so many people head to North America’s more popular ski resorts, the Idaho groomers were generally crowd-free! We particularly loved riding at Silver Mountain and visiting the small town of Wallace nearby! The classic option is Schweitzer, which offers a full-service ski resort and the lovely town of Sandpoint as a base. It’s great for those with an Ikon Pass, as Schweitzer is included.

Kauai, Hawaii

Natasha In A Swimsuit On The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii In Front Of Rental Car

Of course, it’s Hawaii, so it’s always amazing. You’re bound to have a good time, whether it be Oahu, Big Island, Maui, L?na?i, or the other islands. The weather patterns are similar throughout the year, and one of the best times to visit is March.

We’ve been fortunate enough to visit the four main islands for tourism, and our favorite Hawaiian island is Kauai. There are so many things to do in Kauai, including many free nature activities and beautiful hikes, that it will be hard to get bored. Kauai is known for being one of the prettiest Hawaiian islands and for the most laid-back vibe of the four main islands.

Kauai is perfect for those who want to step into nature, stretch their legs on a few hiking trails, and still hit the beach. March may be the high season, but it’s due to the tremendous weather you’re guaranteed. Get ready to plan your trip to Hawaii!

Vietnam

Natasha Sitting At The ??m Sen Hang Múa Viewpoint

Vietnam has so much to offer any traveler who ventures to it. It is a mix of chaos and calm from the contrasts of Hanoi to the mountainous regions of the Northern Highlands to beautiful Ha Long Bay. At one moment, you could find yourself cruising through the endless creeks and rivers of the Mekong Delta and, at the next, sitting beachside at Hue or Nha Trang.

Most visitors’ first exposure to Vietnam will be the electrifying chaos of Hanoi or Ho Chi Min. However, with just a bit of exploration, visitors will find magnificent vistas, warm people, and a peaceful way of life. The food may be the real show-stopper in the country as it has arguably one the best food cultures in the world and some incredible dishes to be enjoyed.

March is the start of Vietnam’s spring season. This means visitors can enjoy pleasant weather throughout the country and witness green rice paddies along the country’s many terraced landscapes. A real highlight lies in the country’s northern countryside, where flowers bloom and provide an explosion of color!

India

Natasha Standing In Front Of The Taj Mahal At Sunrise

India is a bucket list destination for many travelers. However, given the country’s ridiculously hot climate, it’s best to avoid it for most of the year. With that in mind, most travelers will visit the country from October to March when temperatures are milder. March weather in India still remains humid, with temperatures in Delhi hovering around the low 30s C or 80s F.

March is a standout month to visit for those who want to see the Festival of Colors, Holi. It’s a tremendous experience for visitors as the Indians are in good spirits, as the holiday is about colors, spring, and divine love. As most of the country is Hindu, visitors can experience a variety of destinations across the country.

There is no shortage of things to explore as India is a subcontinent. However, be warned, don’t head to India expecting a relaxing holiday, as it’s anything but, as the country will challenge every preconceived notion you may have. The classic tourist route is the “Golden Triangle,” but we highly recommend breaking away from the route and heading to calmer destinations. That said, don’t skip the Taj Mahal, as it’s truly breathtaking and lives up to the hype.

Bermuda

The Cruise Ship Pier For The Bahamas

Bermuda isn’t much different now than when it was first discovered, making it timeless, untouched, and perfect for a beach vacation in March. Temperatures in the month average a comfortable 80°F, and visitors can enjoy lower prices and warm water. And crowds? The crowds don’t get anywhere near those of nearby Caribbean islands! While Bermuda is widely known for its pink, sandy beaches, there’s so much more to this island than lying on the beach.

There are spectacular sunsets, a vast underwater world to be observed, incredible caves to explore, and world-class attractions to visit, including Bermuda Railway Trail National Park, Royal Naval Dockyard, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Bermuda Aquarium, Ocean Discovery Centre, and Dolphin Quest.

Cayman Islands

A Gorgeous Sandy Beach On The Cayman Islands

One of the best places to travel in March is the Cayman Islands. With lower rates, fewer crowds, and fantastic weather that sees temperatures soar to an average of 84°F most days, March is one of the best times of year to travel to the Cayman Islands.

This is also the dry season, and rain is a rarity, so you can rest assured that most of your days will be spent lounging on beautiful, sandy beaches, participating in a range of water sports, and visiting top attractions such as the Cayman Turtle Centre, Pedro St. James, and Starfish Point. Be sure to tour the Camana Bay Shopping Area and tour the incredible underground Cayman Crystal Caves

Las Vegas, United States

The Venetian Canal At Night On The Strip In Las Vegas

Summers in Las Vegas feature almost unbearable heat, so it’s best to visit in the Spring. With a dry desert climate and temperatures reaching a comfortable 72 degrees in March, this is the best time to visit Sin City. While some people want to escape the Spring Break crowds, I’ll assume that if you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas in March, you must be looking for a wild party, and trust me, you’ll find them here!

The city has some of the world’s hottest night spots and hosts the wildest pool parties. Of course, high-stakes gambling is always on the table! Head down The Strip and see incredible dancing fountains, a volcano, and some of Earth’s most extravagant hotels and casinos. Visit attractions such as The Mob Museum, the Neon Museum, and Fremont Street. Escape the party scene and take a day trip to The Grand Canyon or the Valley of Fire, two of the best places to visit in the American Southwest.

For a city that has plenty of major attractions and architecture, few things can compete with the newly completed Sphere. Even if you don’t score tickets to the venue, it’s impossible to miss and worth seeing as the entire exterior is covered in 580,000 sq ft of LED panels that display media. It’s a one-of-a-kind venue and was inaugurated with a residency from U2.

Madrid, Spain

Madrid, SpainSpain is one of the best countries to visit in March

Things start to happen in March in Madrid. Spring is in full force, so the days are getting longer, the trees in the local parks are blooming, and the temperatures are rising. With warm and comfortable 68°F, it’s the perfect time to explore the city and its wonders, including beautiful galleries, luxurious mansions, upscale boutiques, and innovative restaurants.

Some of the other top attractions in the city include Museo Nacional del Prado, Plaza Mayor, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, El Retiro Park, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Royal Palace of Madrid, and Temple of Debod.

Puerto Rico

An Aerial Photo Of A Reef In Puerto Rico

In March in Puerto Rico, the crowds thin out, the temperatures drop to a more comfortable 72°F, and the unbearable humidity that befalls the Caribbean region in summer lifts are just some of the reasons why March is the best time to visit this tropical island.

Puerto Rico has many claims to fame, including being home to the Caribbean’s biggest mall and the virgin tropical rainforest. Whether you want to take it easy on a beach blanket with a gentle breeze, dance the night away in a lively club, go whale watching, or wander the old streets of San Juan, there’s something for everyone.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristobal, Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista, and Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico are just some of the attractions that highlight the history and culture of Puerto Rico.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

Marina Grande In Sorrento, Italy At Sunset

There aren’t too many places on earth that compare to Italy’s Amalfi Coast for romance, stunning coastal scenery, incredible restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere. Sorrento is the perfect place to make your base to explore the stunning coastline.

It’s far from the high season, and visitors won’t enjoy the summer beaches or lidos, but they’ll save a pretty penny and avoid the crowds. This is the time of year when the sun always shines, and the temperatures stay at around 68°F. We’ve always found the Amalfi Coast to be more about the astounding views and food rather than the relaxing beach days.

Perfect conditions for hiking, lazing around on patios sipping cocktails, and checking out the many attractions, including Piazza Tasso, Basilica Sant’Antonino, Villa Comunale di Sorrento, Chiostro di San Francesco, and Bagni Regina Giovanna.

Oman

Natasha Hiking Through A Wadi In Oman

Desert, dunes, coastline, amazing beaches, towering mountains, waterfalls, fjords and world-class attractions. Oman has it all. The best time to visit Oman is in March when the temperatures average a very warm 84°F, and the high-season crowds have gone home.

Head to the Muscat and Salalah regions to check out some amazing beaches or immerse in nature at Wahiba Sands and Wadi Ash Shab. Jebel Akhdar, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Nizwa, and Mutrah Souq are just a few of the other top attractions in the country.

35 FUN & Interesting Facts About Oman

It’s not quite like Chefchaouen, but it’s unique in its own way. Check out the chic galleries, boutique shops, and cozy eateries, or spend a day soaking up the sun at Essaouira Beach or Tagharte Beach.

Pokhara, Nepal

There are also many attractions in the area, including the World Peace Pagoda, Devi’s Falls, Mahendra Cave, the International Mountain Museum, and Shree Bindhyabasini Temple.

Ireland

While there is no season when rain isn’t in the forecast in Ireland, March is a great month to visit for two reasons: it’s the month when the country begins living up to its reputation of being covered in green, and it’s the time of year when the country celebrates its patron saint, Saint Patrick. Besides celebrating the best Irish festival (Saint Patrick’s Day) with copious amounts of green beer and boisterous celebrations, there are many things to do in Ireland.

With temperatures only reaching an average of 53°F, you won’t have to worry about breaking out in a sweat while you explore world-class attractions. The untouched beaches of Donegal, the famous Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny Castle, Kinsale, Kilmainham Gaol, and the lively pubs of Galway are just some of the top things to check out. Of course, you have to make your way to the lively capital city of Dublin!

Sicily

the best things to do in sicily

For weather that’s not too cold and not too hot, with plenty of sunshine and many things to see and do, Sicily is the perfect choice in March. The island is said to be the sunniest in Italy and perhaps even Europe. It’s unlikely to be beach weather, but there are so many amazing sites to see across the island that it would take months to explore.

Most visitors will explore either the island’s West or East. You can’t go wrong with either choice, but March is a great time to explore the more popular and dramatic east as it sees fewer crowds in the month. Some popular destinations in Sicily include Taormina, Mt Etna, Noto, Syracuse, Cefalu, Castellammare del Golfo, Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro, Palermo, Trapani, Erice, and the Valley of the Temples.
