A seasonally active pattern shifts on to the Midwestern Corn Belt; colder on the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, cooler weather is arriving, accompanied by rain and snow showers and gusty winds.  In areas of the western Corn Belt where light snow is falling, generally minor travel issues are occurring.  Meanwhile, lingering mild conditions are confined to the eastern Corn Belt, where Wednesday’s high temperatures should range from 45 to 50°F.

On the Plains, blizzard conditions are winding down from parts of western South Dakota southward into northeastern Colorado and the northwestern corner of Kansas.  Farther north, icy conditions linger in portions of North Dakota and environs, following Tuesday’s freezing rain event.  Winter storm-affected areas continue to experience varying degrees of livestock stress and local travel disruptions.  Elsewhere, mild, dry weather prevails on the southern Plains.

In the South, heavy rain showers are spreading northward through the eastern U.S.  Early Wednesday, some of the heaviest rain is falling in the middle Atlantic States, including Virginia.  The Eastern rain is curtailing off-season farm work.  Farther west, however, dry conditions related to ongoing drought are promoting farm maintenance and other agricultural activities, especially from the Mississippi Delta into the Tennessee Valley.

In the West, a sprawling storm system over the northeastern Pacific Ocean is producing showers along the West Coast, extending as far south as northwestern California.  In advance of the approaching storm, gusty winds have developed in parts of the Northwest.  In addition, above-normal temperatures prevail in the Great Basin and Pacific Coast States.  Farther inland, chilly weather lingers across the Rockies.
