Follow these steps and increase your chances of having a problem-free fall and winter!

woman-writing-in-notebookThere’s no denying that we’re officially in the fall season, and the outdoor temperatures are cooling down, quickly. You’ve likely already turned on your heater for the season, and we hope it’s functioning as effectively and efficiently as possible for you! If you haven’t really given much thought to how well your heater is operating this season so far, then this blog post is for you. You see, if you really want your heating system to work safely, not cost you an arm and a leg, and keep you as comfortable as it is designed to, you have to prepare it to do its job.

How exactly do you do that? We’re glad you asked! Read on as we share three steps to preparing your heater for cooler weather.

Schedule Maintenance

If you haven’t done so already, now is the perfect time to schedule a fall heating maintenance appointment. Maintenance allows our technicians to comprehensively inspect, clean, and adjust the components that need it in your heating system. This optimizes its performance and lets us catch issues before they either lead to heating system breakdowns or safety hazards.

Are you a member of our maintenance program? We have two plans, the Ultimate Plan and the Value Plan. Both of these plans offer cost-saving benefits like two free tune-ups (one for your heating system and one for your cooling system), air filters for life, no diagnostic fees, and discounts on repairs. The Ultimate Plan also grants members a lifetime labor warranty, full home performance inspections, air duct sanitization, and much more! Reach out to our team today to learn about these plans.

Schedule Repairs as Needed

If you had your system tuned up by our team already, then we would have alerted you to any need for small repairs. This could have been something like lubricating worn-down motor bearings or replacing a fan belt. Or it could have been something a bit more urgent. Whatever the case, whenever you’re alerted to a need for heating repair, the best thing you can do is to schedule that repair right away. This prevents small problems from becoming much larger, and more expensive, problems.

Change Your Air Filter

Did you know that the air filter that comes standard with your heater is not there to protect your indoor air quality? This is the common assumption, which is why we bring it up. That filter is actually in place to protect the furnace, heat pump, or heating system from dust and other debris that can get inside and damage sensitive components of the equipment.

When this filter gets too clogged up with debris, what happens is that it restricts airflow. This can cause your heater to struggle as it tries unsuccessfully to reach the desired temperature you set on the thermostat. As a result, you’ll be using your heater inefficiently, and paying more for its use, because it will have to run longer and draw more power to operate.

These are three basic ways you can properly prep your heater for winter. Also ask us about upgrading your thermostat if it’s older than your HVAC systems and having routine duct cleaning done to improve system efficiency even more!
