Finnair Plus allows its members to convert redeemable points (soon Avios) to tier points at a 3:1 ratio, and they made some changes on how many can be converted this past fall (read more here).

I participated in Finnair’s points sale in 2021 that earned you elite qualifying points in addition to the usual miles, and I also swapped some points to tier points then to get the status upped to Platinum (Oneworld Emerald), which was expiring on December 31, 2023 (the status from the deal lasted for two years).

Finnair is on March 9, 2024, moving to an entirely revenue-based program, sans some partner flights, and the number of points you earn, both award and tier, are based on the cash you pay and nothing else. They will also adopt IAG’s (British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus & Vueling) and Qatar Airways Avios as its loyalty currency. Qatar Airways owns close to 30% of IAG.

Finnair Awad Points to Tier Points Conversion Experience:

My current status was valid until December 31, 2023, and I decided to get another year of Finnair Plus Platinum and made the conversion.

I had 87,708 Finnair Plus tier points, and the Platinum requirement is 150,000.

So, I had to convert 189,000 award points to 63,000 tier points + pay a 10 euro fee.

The points were in my account immediately, and the new “goal” was the Lumo tie that requires 450,000 tier points, of which 350,000 must be earned on Finnair flights.

Conclusion

The conversion process is rather smooth, and the tier points are instantly posted to the account. I assume that the upgrade vouchers will show up once the status rolls over to 2024 on January 1.

The Emerald status comes with two long-haul and four short-haul upgrades that basically offset the award miles lost in this conversion. Plus, I get to gift Finnair Plus Gold status (Oneworld Sapphire) to a family member in 2024.

I will soft land to Gold in 2025 unless I decide to buy some Finnair flights pre-March 9 that will be credited under the non-spend plan.

You may wonder why I even bother with Finnair Plus if I have a lifetime Platinum (Oneworld Sapphire) with AA and Gold (Oneworld Emerald) with BA.

I have found it easier and more enjoyable to write about programs I am engaging with as a consumer to find out the possible pressure points and what they are doing well. Also, I am in Finland three or four times per year, as this Christmas, to meet family members and friends. So, at the end of the day, it makes sense.
