In response to the ongoing Sudanese civil war displacing 6.6 million people, rapper Bas released "Khartoum," a song focusing on the humanitarian crisis. The track explores displacement, loss, and diaspora pain, and serves as a plea for global awareness.

As of December 2023, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports in Sudan that 6.6 million people have been displaced, over 12,190 lives have been lost, and there is a dire lack of basic necessities due to limited technical and humanitarian aid.

Amidst the current global conflicts, media reporting reveals biases. In response, Bas highlights the current Sudanese civil war and displacement of Sudanese people on his track “Khartoum” featuring Nigerian artist Adekunle Gold taken off his upcoming album We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up due December 15, 2023.

The song navigates Bas’s journey through anger, inner turmoil, diaspora pain, and the unfolding events in his homeland. In a matter of minutes, “Khartoum” weaves a stirring narrative, its value truly realized when listened to and shared. Set against a backdrop of a bright and hopeful production, with Adekunle Gold’s soothing vocals on the hook, the track serves as both “a call to action” and “a plea for global awareness”, as shared by the artist. Bas’s intention is clear—it’s a powerful amalgamation of comfort, a shout to ensure the message resonates, and a profound embrace for those who have endured similar hardships.

Bas asks “Why nobody care why don’t they put us on the media?” through the lens of Khartoum in its beautiful visual companion that features the past, present, and optimistic ache for the future. Bas’s verses carry the weight of bombs echoing during Ramadan, causing his mother’s tears to persist—a visceral reminder of the duration of this war.

The track sees the Dreamville rapper share more than a song, but as he states, a “message.” It is a profound embrace for those grappling with the harsh realities, and through its instilled musical beauty, Bas challenges the world to care and confront the biases that often shroud humanitarian crises like that in Sudan.
