If you haven’t noticed, we are big on Trout Spey. We like everything about it. As it continues to quickly be adopted by more fly anglers, this new method of fly fishing with two to five-weight two-handed rods should become more familiar to everyone who enjoys fishing for trout.

Because Trout Spey rods are smaller, some of your standard fly patterns are too big and heavy to cast. While you may have to rethink your angling strategy for these smaller rods, we should also consider rethinking our flies. Trout Spey flies are designed specifically for this rod size and weight.

The best Trout Spey flies are small and lightweight enough to turn over with a smaller rod. So we asked our local fly shop, Mossy’s Fly Shop here in Anchorage, Alaska to provide us with a Trout Spey fly that is small, lightweight, easy to cast, and of course effective, hence the Micro Sculpin. Simple to tie, simple to cast, simply effective.

Shank: Aqua Flies 27mm Return Eye Dumbbell Eyes: Hareline Small Brass Eyes Gold Hook: Firehole 320 Sz 10 Stinger Material: 30lb Power Pro Tail: Natural Pine Squirrel Zonker Underbody: Hareline Rainbow Scud Dark Shade Over Wing: Natural Pine Squirrel Zonker Flash: Angel Hair Nasty Rusty Collar: Marabou Brown Head: Natural Pine Squirrel Thread: 100 GSP

Step 1.  Place your shank in the vice and attach your stinger hook and power pro, after a couple turns of thread adjust your length and tie down completely.  Turn the shank over and place your dumbbell eyes 1 to 2 eye widths back of shank eye.

Step 2. Tie in your Squirrel tail, making it just short of the hook point.  DO NOT trim the Squirrel, fold it back out of the way.

Step 3-1 & 3-2. Create a dubbing loop and place your dubbing in the loop.  Spin the dubbing and then pick and brush out, creating a thin rope.

Step 4. Make 2-3 turns of your dubbing to form the underbody.  Sweep the material down on both sides.

Step 5.  Pull the squirrel over the top of the dubbing underbody.  Pulling tight, tie down in front of the underbody. Trim off excess squirrel.

Step 6.  Using a sparse amount of angel hair, tie in a small clump on each side of the shank.

Step 7. Using the tips of your marabou, trim off a small amount and place in a dubbing loop and spin.  Pick out any trapped feathers.

Step 8. Make 1-2 turns of marabou to create the collar.

Step 9-1 & 9-2. Making a dubbing loop, place a small amount of squirrel cut from the hide in the loop.  Spin.  Brush and pick out trapped hair.  Creating a small rope.

Step 10.  Make a turn behind the dumbbells and then figure 8 wrap over and around the eyes, finishing with 1-2 turns in front.  Tie off, Whip finish, and voila!
