I Am Fancy Like That

It is easy to let others define us by age or appearance. We start only seeing that ourselves.

This is Peanut Butter Brickle. When you meet someone, what do you think is the first thing that they notice about you?

I’m sure when others see me, they see my age. They see that first. I’ve noticed that lately. It’s hard not to when that is always the first thing someone asks about. My age.

In some ways, I’m ok with people asking about my age. I am not trying to hide it. In some ways, I’m proud of it. But I also don’t want it to be all of who I am. I am perplex. I have many sides of me. I’m fancy like that.

And you are fancy too.

All of us are more than just one thing. And yet, there is always going to be one trait of us that stands out. So how do we get past that? Why do we need to get past that?

Because it’s easy to let others define us by age or appearance. We start only seeing that ourselves. Some things we can improve upon. But some things like age can only be fancied up. And I fancy up my age by reminding others I’m still young at heart. I challenge how they view an older dog. And I try to help them to remember that we are more than appearance.

Do I think that when strangers see me that they see my history and life beyond a number? No. I know they don’t know how much I’ve traveled or who I have loved.

They don’t know I was in a shelter or the life I’ve led.

The same goes for others I meet. I don’t see their parents or their family or how they were raised or the life they have led.

It’s up to me to put appearance aside and be kind. Being kind is the fanciest trait you can have.

It makes you beautiful. It makes you radiate kindness back. It helps everyone to understand each other in different ways.

So be fancy.

Be the fanciest version of you. Wear kindness more than age. That is timeless beauty.
