The Planned Ban on XL Bullies

The Government have confirmed that a Ban on XL Bullies will begin on 31st December 2023.

It is important to remember that you will be able to keep your XL Bully if you comply with the steps needed to get a Certificate of Exemption.  This is:

We think the costs will be something like this:

Muzzle – we recommend a ‘Baskerville’ cage that doesn’t completely close the mouth: £20

Lead – robust, non-retractable lead is essential: £15

Neuter – Female spay / Male castrate £295 -480 / £195-470

3rd Party liability Insurance: £0 with £25 annual membership with the Dogs Trust

Certificate of Exemption Application Costs £92.40

We are conscious that owners on low incomes may particularly struggle to cover the costs of neutering and insurance needed going forward.

We will be working with our partners and other organisations to confirm what practical support and advice we can offer that is able to support responsible owners to help prevent a friendly dog from being euthanised.

What To Do

Ensure your behaviour, and your dogs’ behaviour, are exemplary and cannot be perceived as a risk.

Start on the requirements straight away to demonstrate that you are a responsible owner with a low-risk dog.  Do not assume that rescues will be able to take in your dog.  It’s important that you take positive actions yourself at this point.  Do ask rescue centres and others for advice or support if necessary.

Don’t Chance It

If unsure, it is best to assume your dog will be ‘type’ and prepare for exemption, rather than have your dog seized and have to surrender it because you can’t afford the increasing kennel fees whilst you argue the case.

Know your responsibilities and your rights

Understand your responsibilities under the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1991/65/contents Cooperate with the police, and also understand your rights. Police can’t enter your home without a warrant or being invited.  Don’t sign paperwork without advice.
