The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise is full of iconic and colorful characters that have unique personalities and stylish designs. Almost every one of them has a separate fanbase due to this diversity, and the main Joestar line of protagonists almost has a cult-like following due to their influence on the unique world of JoJo.
Jotaro Kujo is no exception, and he is perhaps more beloved within the fanbase than any other member of the Joestar family. What makes every JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure protagonist stand out is that they are all unique characters with their different personalities, strengths, and flaws – unlike the usual generic goody-two-shoes we are used to seeing in anime.
Naturally, when a character is this famous and shows up in so many parts of the series – people want to know more about them! Whether it’s facts or details that you may have missed, it is never a waste of time to learn more about your favorite protagonists. So, here are the top 16 facts about Jotaro Kujo that make him stand out!
In this article, you will learn details about these important facts:
A Better Fate in a Different Universe The Mystery of Jotaro’s Hat Jotaro Kujo is Supposed to Look Like Joseph Joestar The Only JoJo Protagonists Jotaro Never Met Why We Don’t See Jotaro’s Father Most Recurring Joestar Jotaro’s Favorite Movie and Musician Jotaro Kujo is a Marine Biologist Jotaro Kujo is Josuke Higashikata’s Nephew Why Star Platinum’s Power Decreases with Time Jotaro Wasn’t Always Rude Jotaro is an Absentee Dad The Mascot of the Franchise Jotaro Has PTSD The Tragic Cause of Jotaro’s Death There's a Rebooted Jotaro Kujo1. A Better Fate in A Different Universe
While in the canon, Jotaro Kujo and the Joestar bloodline’s fate as a whole is quite tragic – in an alternate world story penned for the video game JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, things take an unexpected turn. The game is essentially a crossover of every single JoJo storyline and at the end of it all – the only two people standing are Jotaro Kujo and Heaven Ascension DIO.
This version of DIO has a special stand called The World Over Heaven that can erase anything it touches and he manages to defeat all Joestars using this power. However, Jotaro Kujo outsmarts DIO and manages to gain his powers of erasing and rewriting the world – and eventually he makes a perfect world for the Joestars where none of them will ever have to suffer from the curse of their bloodline. This automatically provides better fates to Jotaro Kujo and his daughter – especially since the version of Jotaro to do this was his 17-year-old self, which gives him the chance to be a better parent for the future.
2. The Mystery of Jotaro’s Hat
Jotaro Kujo’s hat is quite often a topic of debate as fans cannot decide whether he wears a weird hat that is painted with the color of his hair or if half of his hair are somehow styled after his hat.
The answer to this is that he wears a special hat that he stylizes for himself which has a cut-off segment in the back which lets his black hair pop-out, while the top and frontal sides are the hat itself. It’s incredibly specific and stylish for a guy as serious as Jotaro – but if there’s one thing most JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure protagonists share it’s the fact that they don’t forget to look after their style even in the most tragic moments of their lives.
3. Jotaro Kujo is Supposed to Look Like Joseph Joestar
Jotaro Kujo is the grandson of Joseph Joestar and the son of a Japanese man called Sadao Kujo – but he does not look like his father. Instead, he is supposed to look like Joseph Joestar and it’s quite obvious from just looking at the two of them together as well. While not too incredibly obvious in the manga since Hirohiko Araki’s art-style keeps changing, it’s quite clear in the anime adaption if you pay attention.
However, this is more directly confirmed in the anime when Jotaro Kujo meets Josuke Higashikata’s mother and she confuses him for Joseph due to how similar the two look despite the age. And she can’t be blamed for not seeing the age difference too clearly anyway since she seems fairly young herself and Josuke is not that old as a son anyway. Even Jotaro’s response is that ‘look, no wrinkles’ which goes to show how similar they must look.
4. The Only JoJo Protagonists Jotaro Never Met
Firstly, this is speaking only of the original universe as every part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure after Stone Ocean takes place in an alternate universe. Since Jotaro Kujo is present in so many different parts of the series, he has met Joseph Joestar, Josuke Higashikata, and Jolyne Cujoh. It’s obvious why he couldn’t meet Jonathan Joestar since he passed away way before Jotaro was ever born.
However, the one Joestar he never met despite both of them being alive and not that far from each other is Giorno Giovanna, the technical son of Dio Brando but biological son of Jonathan Joestar. He does ask Koichi Hirose to collect a sample of Giorno’s skin to see if he really is related to Dio Brando – but he does not see it fit to chase him personally to find out. Another important detail is the fact Koichi comments ‘he kind of looks like you’ – which is natural because they are technically related and descendants of Jonathan.

5. Why We Don’t See Jotaro’s Father
Holy Kujo is an important part of Jotaro Kujo’s life and is always clinging to him no matter how bad things get or how inappropriately her son behaves. She is also the main reason Jotaro and Joseph Joestar embark on their journey to kill Dio Brando, as doing so would save her life and cause her unusable stand to be suppressed for good.
His father, on the other hand, is a topic we barely ever see being discussed nor do we see his identity. That’s because he was barely around in Jotaro’s childhood and used to be absent due to tours related to his job – and after a certain point he fell in love with a different woman and never came back to Holy or Jotaro, leaving Jotaro without a father figure for the rest of his life as Holy never found someone else. The fact Holy never remarried could be related to the trivia ‘Joestars only love one woman in their life’, as it’s entirely possible that female Joestars only love one man in their life too.
This is often correlated to Joseph Joestar saying ‘I’ll never forgive the Japanese’, since Sadao Kujo was a Japanese man and left his daughter and grandson all by themselves.
6. Most Recurring Joestar
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure does not have protagonists return very often. Jonathan Joestar, Josuke Higashikata of the first universe, Jolyne Cujoh, Giorno Giovanna, and Johnny Joestar are only a part of the stories they originated in. Joseph Joestar is one of the only two exceptions, as he shows up in Parts 2, 3, and 4. The other exception is none other than Jotaro Kujo, as he shows up in Parts 3, 4, 5, and 6, making him the single most recurring JoJo protagonist ever.
Originally a protagonist, he re-appears in the Diamond is Unbreakable story arc as a main character and shows up in a cameo in the Vento Aureo (Golden Wind) arc. Then finally, he returns as a supporting character in the Stone Ocean storyline and the fate of his character is finally concluded there.
7. Jotaro’s Favorite Movie and Musician
While we see Jotaro Kujo being a badass who pushes people away most of the time, he has a very active life full of hobbies and interests behind the camera. This includes the fact he enjoys movies and music among other things and his favorite movie is ‘Never Cry Wolf’. If you don’t remember that movie – it was released by Disney under the Walt Disney Pictures label and is considered to be a masterpiece by many. It has tons of pro-environment messages and themes which makes sense since Jotaro Kujo really loves the ocean.
His favorite musician on the other hand is Toshinobu Kubota, who has made songs of countless different genres and is most notably known for songs like ‘Love Rain’, ‘Dance If You Want It’, ‘La La La Love Song’, and so on. He’s one of the best-selling musicians of Japan and has sold over 16 million records all over the world as of 2020. With how unique Jotaro Kujo’s personality is outside of the tough-guy demeanor he puts on, it’s no surprise that his favorite artist is not generic.
8. Jotaro Kujo is a Marine Biologist
While his difficulties as a student and tough-guy attitude make him look like someone who wouldn’t be academically intelligent – that assumption cannot be further from the truth. Jotaro Kujo’s personal life often suffers from his tragic family history and the harsh events he has to go through, and that combined with the pressure he gets from society to be perfect is one of the reasons his grades in school began to drop.
However, despite his bad-guy attitude towards people and a seemingly punkish lifestyle in his early days, he is actually an intelligent person who has non-violent interests in life – and as seen in an extra detail added in the anime where he is sometimes seen reading about marine life, Jotaro Kujo’s career of choice is basically anything that would get him closer to the ocean. This is further supported by the fact his favorite film is Never Cry Wolf, which is all about pro-environment themes.
Eventually, he becomes a Marine Biologist by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable and it can be seen in the white outfit that he wears too. This carries onto his cameo in Part 5: Golden Wind (Vento Aureo) as well as he is still wearing the iconic white outfit, confirming he’s still consistently working in the occupation. By the time we get to Part 6: Stone Ocean, he wears different colors again compared to the usual white – but this does not confirm he quit his job in any way and wouldn’t make sense anyway, a man’s gotta eat to afford those cool outfits with cut-off hats.
9. Jotaro Kujo is Josuke Higashikata’s Nephew
How Josuke Higashikata and Jotaro Kujo are related is often a topic of confusion, because generally we are used to seeing JoJo protagonists as descendants of the previous one and Josuke is younger than Jotaro anyway to further support that confusion. However, things are not as simple as they same and the relation they have will surprise you in case you did not know already.
Josuke Higashikata is the son of Joseph Joestar, who happens to be the grandfather of Jotaro Kujo. That makes Josuke an uncle of Jotaro and the step brother of his mother Holy Kujo. If someone told you this before the Diamond is Unbreakable story arc revealed that detail itself, you’d think they’re joking with you because with the mentor-like bond that Jotaro Kujo establishes with Josuke, you’d expect Jotaro to be the uncle instead.
Notably, this also makes Joseph Joestar the only known Joestar to impregnate two different women in one lifestyle as it has been stated as random trivia once that Joestars only love one woman in their life. Some fans theorize that this means that if a Joestar loves their daughter a lot it may be the only woman they love in their life – but that is most likely a misconception and it was probably meant in a romantic context.

10. Why Star Platinum’s Power Decreases with Time
Star Platinum is not too much of a unique stand by the start of the Stardust Crusaders story arc since its powers lie in brute strength rather than anything special or versatile like other stands. It is Jotaro’s strength and willpower that have always driven it to be one of the most powerful stands and can face off against almost any enemy that stands in his way. However, once Jotaro fights Dio Brando in his peak vampire form and nearly to the extreme levels of strength and time-stopping powers of The World – Jotaro manages to evolve his stand to gain powers of stopping time as well.
This version of Star Platinum is often referred to as ‘Star Platinum The World’ and is one of the most powerful stands in the JoJo universe, being able to casually stop time for 6 seconds in order to defeat Dio Brando. This changes though, because Jotaro does not use his time-stopping abilities for around 10 years between the time from Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable. This causes the ability to weaken down to 1-2 seconds at a time which only barely allows him to dodge some moves, which isn’t even that helpful when the opponent is not pulling the punches like Josuke Higashikata does against him.
Whether he does not like using the power or never had to until he ran into the evil stand users in the town of Morioh is unknown, but it is certainly confirmed that he did not use the power on purpose. Fans usually theorize that it may cause strain to his human body, compared to Dio who was a vampire and could regenerate any damage done to himself through the use of time-stopping. It’s strange though, as a part of why he is absent from the life of his family is because he tries to find potential stand using threats who could be following Dio.
For what it’s worth though, Jotaro does practice a bit and bring the time back to 4-5 seconds in the Stone Ocean arc as the threat they face can end the world itself, and the safety of his daughter is in the way too. His parental instincts have easily been the biggest push he’s ever experienced in his life so it’s only natural that he only fixed his time-stopping durability when her safety is at stake.

11. Jotaro Wasn’t Always Rude
Jotaro Kujo was actually really normal as a child, as his mother Holy describes him as ‘such a good boy’ in the past. He used to attend school properly and participated in the usual activities you would expect from a child such as playing with balls and running on tracks. He used to be supervised by his mother most of the time since his father would often be on tour, and it never stopped him from being a pleasant child through most of his life.
Whether his change towards delinquency started partially because of his father never coming back from one of his tours (as these things can act as a realization at a later point in life even if the childhood goes normally) or not, the main factor to it is without a doubt the awakening of his stand Star Platinum. Not knowing how stands work, he originally assumes that he is possessed by a demonic spirit and one thing that has always been consistent about his character is the fact he starts pushing everyone close to him away whenever he starts to feel like his presence is a danger to them.
His rude demeanor does not manage to drive people away, whether it’s the girls in school or his mother – but this does not stop Jotaro from trying his best and he proceeds to jail himself because he believes the demonic spirit that is possessing him will proceed to hurt people. This causes him to be extremely rude to his mother because he believes she might stop trying to be close to him but it does not help and she finally calls her father Joseph Joestar because he had a stand as well.
It is even implied that he tried to kill or severely harm himself at one point because when he tries to convince his family that he is possessed, he confidently shows them that trying to shoot himself automatically gets stopped by his stand Star Platinum because at that point he is not consciously controlling it.
A good part of this personality of his comes from the geeky side of his interests as he likes watching movies, and he adopted lines and traits from the badass characters he liked from his favorite flicks. There’s no shortage of clear proof that Jotaro is actually a soft person who cares about those around him deep down, he just suffers from many issues that causes him to distance himself from everyone and a part of that is his rudeness through which he tries to push people away.
Another thing to notice further is that parts of this personality fade as we move onto different parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, with him expressing his emotions a bit better than his past in Stone Ocean, towards his daughter Jolyne Cujoh. Before that point, he just believed if he shows emotions it would become a weakness for him.
12. Jotaro is an Absentee Dad
The worst thing Jotaro Kujo ever did in his life was abandoning his daughter Jolyne Cujoh (check our article dedicated to her) and divorcing his wife – and this caused him to be absent from Jolyne’s life altogether after a certain point and this caused them to fall out to the point Jolyne changed her last name’s spellings from ‘Kujo’ to ‘Cujoh’ in spite.
While not much is known about his ex-wife, we have been shown how she looks like and it is mentioned that she raised Jolyne all by herself since Jotaro disappeared. The reason behind Jotaro’s divorce and neglect as a parent is a tragic one, though. It is because Dio’s followers were spread out all over the world and would come to harm Jotaro and his family since they are from the Joestar family. This caused him a great deal of fear towards their safety and he decided to distance himself from them and hoped that no one ever harm them due to their relations to Jotaro Kujo.
Unfortunately, as we know by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean – this did not quite work and Enrico Pucci went for Jolyne Cujoh’s life anyway. Sure, we can argue that people may have tried to kill her even sooner had Jotaro lived close to her – but ultimately it just feels like he wasted all those years not being close to his daughter for nothing since danger came to them nonetheless.
Another thing that makes this even more tragic is that his father was absentee too and disappeared from his life after a point in Jotaro’s childhood. Jotaro must have grown up believing he will never be the same but unfortunately ended up doing the same thing to his daughter despite the fact he truly loved her.
13. The Mascot of the Franchise
Jotaro Kujo and his stand Star Platinum are so popular that he is pretty much the mascot of the franchise, as he is the one JoJo protagonist that even most people who aren’t even fans of the series recognize as long as they are into anime and manga. Whenever there is merchandise, he is usually the most sold figurine and he is often at the front of the box arts every time there’s a non-specific video game for the franchise.
Although Hirohiko Araki might want more attention towards his more recent work instead in comparison – it’s just something that cannot be avoided since it’s just the most profitable thing to do to have a mascot represent your work instead of trying to push fresher faces. One way or another, even with the new universe being in place – Jotaro is the face of the franchise and that might not change anytime soon.
Any good hero mascot needs a villain to fight though, which is why Dio Brando and his stand The World are the opposing mascots of the franchise as well.
14. Jotaro Has PTSD
While it’s not something explicitly stated within JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure canon – it is something that almost every fan agrees on and the author has not denied either. Jotaro Kujo has been through extremely painful and outright tragic events in his life as early as 17 years of age. He lost most of his friends that he made on the journey to Egypt, and the events made an already distant Jotaro Kujo even further reluctant to keep in touch with anyone that was close to him as he does not want to see or cause more death around him.
It’s a lot to take in for such a young guy, especially when he’s not even a cold person and only displays that persona on purpose. It’s no surprise that he barely has friends and even abandoned his wife and child because of the trauma he experienced in life, and only shows up to places as a last resort most of the times. Keep in mind he tried to harm himself as a teenager because he thought that Star Platinum is a demonic spirit possessing him.
Despite all the pain, though, he has been shown to truly treasure the memories he made with the Joestar group from Stardust Crusaders and he keeps a picture of them together in his room at all times.
15. The Tragic Cause of Jotaro’s Death
Despite how ridiculously overpowered Enrico Pucci was by the end of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean – one thing that the characters have in common are the human capacities they share of having to control these powers and the mistakes they can make along the way. While Jotaro Kujo was very outmatched by Enrico, he still managed to nearly kill the antagonist and save the world from experiencing a reboot.
However, he lost only by a single second (or step as you prefer in the literal translation) from striking Enrico and it resulted in his tragic death. The reason for why he failed by one second is none other than love for his daughter Jolyne Cujoh and the parental instincts that came over him. If this was Jotaro Kujo in the past he would have stuck to the mission, but while he was about to attack Enrico Pucci and deliver a finishing blow – Enrico immediately threw knives towards Jolyne in the same fashion as Dio Brando used to in the past.
Rationally, Jotaro killing Enrico would have been more useful and saved everyone else even if Jolyne did not survive, but his paternal instincts get the better of him and he ends up trying to save Jolyne instead. This gives Enrico the advantage and he manages to brutally kill Jotaro Kujo and this also causes the reboot of the world to carry onwards.
He also manages to kill Jolyne Cujoh later on anyway, as she sacrifices herself to protect Emporio Alniño. All of this could have avoided if Jolyne wasn’t Jotaro’s weakness, as having emotions in a life full of Dio’s evil influence is like signing your own death warrant.
Not all of it was in vain, however, as ultimately the universe manages to reset itself to its previous state and reassigns the souls of Jotaro and Jolyne into less tragic rebooted versions of the Joestar family. Because everyone who was directly killed by Enrico is rebooted into new people while everyone else is the same as before and unaffected.
16. There's a Rebooted Jotaro Kujo
As mentioned above, those who were directly killed by Enrico Pucci before the universe rebooted for one last time were erased and reinstated with counterparts in the new universe – Jotaro Kujo is one of those people.
We never get to see this new version of him despite seeing the ‘Irene’ rebooted version of his daughter Jolyne Cujoh, but it is confirmed that he exists as she tells Emprio Alniño that she is going to see her father with her boyfriend to ask for approval to marry him. The boyfriend himself happens to be a rebooted version of Narciso Anasui simply called ‘Annakiss’, so it’s very clear that everyone killed by Enrico did get a new life. Whether it’s just a random replacement or their actual souls being reborn and subconsciously finding each other is unknown, but we all like to personally believe the latter.
While we will never get to see this version of Jotaro as Parts 7 and 8 are set in a new continuity – we may see a different version of Jotaro someday as Dio Brando and Josuke Higashikata have reappeared as different people in the current universe.
Two things should be kept in mind though:
Everyone not killed by Enrico is the same, completely unaffected, and unaware of everything that happened in the new universe. This new universe at the end of Stone Ocean is an alternate universe that is unrelated to the new continuity of the series that started after JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run. The two alternate universes are often confused to be one – but creator Hirohiko Araki has confirmed that they are completely different. This makes a total of 3 different JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure universes to exist in canon, with a few non-canon ones also existent such as the one from the Eyes of Heaven video game. That’s it for our 16 most interesting facts about Jotaro Kujo that make him stand out!
