I normally don’t write seasonal posts, but seeing as I’ve published a lot of reviews this year compared to my usual, I thought I’d put out a summary post of sorts while I listen to tunes from the Persona 3-5 soundtracks (If you’re also a fan, huge recommendation to check out the 2017 Persona Super Live!).

Let’s take a look at 2023’s reviews!

In 2023 I’ve published 83 posts, a far cry from this blog’s peak years, but still an improvement over the 30 posts in 2022.

19 of this year’s 83 posts were reviews, all of which were spoiler free.

The rest were primarily writing prompts, something I started this year, and after I publish my final 2 reviews for the genre review collection, I’ll likely go back to although hopefully I’ll feel inspired to write other posts here and there as well!

Highlights

The highest rated review I published was that of Eminence in Shadow, at 9.5 / 10.
Next up is a tie between Handyman Saitou, Summertime Render, and Psycho Pass with 9 / 10.

All four are without a doubt my favourite series from what I’ve watched this year, and they all fit different genres with some fantasy, comedy, sci-fi, and mystery / suspense in there. A great collection really!

The lowest rated review I published was actually many different anime, all at?7 / 10. I guess despite how critical I can be at times, it doesn’t show in my ratings. In reality, I think the reason for this is simply that I tend to vet the anime I watch via the synopsis before watching, and then in addition to that I tend to not really want to write reviews for anime I didn’t enjoy.

Anyways, this year 7‘s were given out to: Island, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, Princess Connect! Re:Dive, and Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World.

If I had to choose, I think I’d say that either Summertime Render or Psycho Pass had the most unique story of all the anime I reviewed. It’s possible I’d have never watched either of these if I hadn’t gone through with watching an anime from every genre this year. Just goes to show how it was a really good idea, I’d been missing out on such great series.

The oldest anime I reviewed this year was Serial Experiments Lain, followed by Boogiepop Phantom. Same goes for these two, as the genre collection actually motivated me to watch these classics! And while they didn’t rate higher than some of the above mentioned series, it’s still great to have seen series like these at least once. Lain in particular was impressive as many of the ideas within that series were really ahead of their time.

And that’ll be all for this post!

I think the biggest lesson I’ve taken away from this year was that branching out to other genres is a great way to expose yourself to amazing anime that you’d maybe never have seen otherwise. In fact, it worked out so well that I may have to even consider doing it again in 2024!

I hope that you all had a great year and continue to have a great time in the new year!

Until next time,
Happy New Year!
