Inner conflict …

This is an area of struggle for all of us at one time or another.

Did you know that the reason why you’re anxious may be a conflict between 2 parts of your inner-self?

One part of you may be ambitious at work, ready to date again, or determined to speak up for yourself. At the same time, another part of you may want to play it safe and stay invisible, living in a comfort zone you built to avoid getting hurt or rejected.

You end up with two opposing sides playing tug-of-war, both working to pull you in their direction.

Inner conflicts are much like an accelerating car where you are moving forward while also pulling the brakes simultaneously, leading to a lot of internal energy without much forward motion.

So how do we know if we live in the space of inner conflict?

The best way to understand what is happening is to pay attention to your self-talk.

What is it you are saying to yourself?

Do you notice two, opposing voices inside of you trying to convince you to move on, take a risk, push through – or stay put and stay small because you are much safer this way?

Other ways inner conflicts show up in your life are indecisiveness, procrastination, and self-sabotaging behavior.

Although this inner conflict is something that both men and women face often, it is an area of great struggle for men. Being raised in a society that tells them, they need to be tough, ambitious, and competitive makes it hard for them to attend to and share their more sensitive and insecure parts of themselves.

If this is an area of struggle for you, please join me for part 2 of my 3 part series on “Men & Anxiety.”

In this next episode, I discuss with James the painful realizations, the steps it took to overcome the anxiety, and how he as my client has been doing since their time with me.
