“When you are feeling overwhelmed, remember: the goal is functional.”| KC Davis
Life gets busy, messes are made and sometimes, cleaning up those messes is enough to make us want to run and hide. But as soon as we let our chores slide, a familiar inner voice pipes up, judging and shaming us for not being able to stay on top of things. So how do we break out of the cycle of overwhelm and shame?
This is where my guest and best-selling author KC Davis’s concept “The 5 Things Tidying Method” comes in handy…
KC states that in any given room, there are only five things to deal with
Trash
Dishes
Laundry
Things that have a place
Things that don’t have a home
This allows us to take on a given mess with small, actionable steps that make it more manageable and less overwhelming.
For instance let’s say your living room was getting a little unlivable you can use the “5 Things Tidying Method” to make it functional again …
Pick up all the trash and place it in a bag and set it by the door to go out.
Put all the dirty dishes into the sink or dishwasher if you have one.
Put all of the laundry into a laundry basket.
Put things that have a home away.
Finally, end your clean with a pile of things that need a home – you can put them away or tuck them into a box out of site to deal with on another day.
The key here is to break tasks down into simple, manageable actions that you allow yourself the choice to take on as a whole project or just one piece at a time.
Remember as KC says your home works for you, not the other way around.
If you are ready to break through the belief that there must be something wrong with you that you can’t stay on top of your housework and learn effective ways to move through your daily chores with greater ease, tune into my Get Real episode Thursday, April 14th to hear KC Davis share her story of struggle and what she has done to make her life more manageable.
