Insert a toothpick into the center and if it comes out clean, it's done! You can also gently shake the pie and if it doesn't jiggle, it's done.

Test kitchen tips

I've found this this taco casserole turns out best when you use a glass or ceramic pie plate. You can use a deep dish pie plate or a regular pie dish, whichever you have on hand is just fine.  Make sure that you cook the ground beef until is no longer pink, and then drain off the excess grease before you add the taco seasoning.  Top your slice of pie with your favorite taco toppings, sour cream, green onions, or a little salsa will work great on top of this dish.

Variations

You can make this savory pie a little healthier by swapping out the beef taco meat, for ground turkey or ground chicken.  Not a fan of pepperjack cheese? Swap it out for cheddar cheese, Monterey jack, or Mexican blend cheese. Use your favorite it will turn out just fine!  Want to add a little extra spice to this delicious comfort food? Add a dash or two of hot sauce to your ground beef mixture.  Beef up this casserole dish a little by adding a can of drained black beans, black olives, or even some taco sauce to the meat mixture.  Need to make it gluten-free use gluten-free bisquick to meet your needs.
