Ingredients needed to make ‘ahi poke tacos

(Full recipe instructions and ingredient amounts are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post)

For this recipe I like to use spicy ‘ahi poke. But you can also use shoyu ‘ahi poke, Hawaiian style poke, or even spicy salmon poke.

poke taco ingredients

For the spicy ‘ahi poke

Kewpie mayonnaise. This is a Japanese mayo that can be found in the Asian aisle at most grocery stores. If you can’t find it, feel free to use the mayonnaise of your choice. Sriracha. Or your favorite hot sauce. Shoyu. Japanese style soy sauce. Sesame oil. A little goes a long way. Be sure to use sparingly as to not over power the dish. Sashimi grade ‘ahi. It’s important to get fresh tuna from a reputable source. If you can’t find fresh tuna, fresh frozen will also work. Green onion. Adds a pop of color, texture, and flavor. Maika’i Organic Nori Furikake. This can be found at your local Foodland in the Asian aisle.

For the taco shells

Wonton wrappers. Thin sheets of dough made from flour, water, and salt, commonly used in Asian cuisine and can be found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Vegetable oil. Or the frying oil of your choice.

For the avocado crema

Avocado. I really like Haas, but any variety will do. Cilantro. A little. A lot. Totally up to you. Sour cream. This adds a little more creaminess to the crema. Limes. Fresh limes are best, but you can use packaged lime juice if that’s all you can find. Garlic. Fresh is also best here. avocado crema ingredients

How to make poke tacos

First start with the poke. Make the spicy ‘ahi poke sauce and set aside. Then cube up the ‘ahi and toss with the spicy sauce. You’ll want to let the poke marinate in the refrigerator while you prepare the rest of the recipe.

Next, you’ll make the taco shells. For this I like to use wonton wrappers. Cut the square shaped wrapper into a circle using a round cookie cutter.Heat your frying oil of choice and gently place the wonton wrappers in the oil to fry until golden brown and crispy.

Use the back of a wooden spoon or spatula to help shape the wrappers into a taco while frying by pushing down gently on the wrapper. Remove from the oil and let it drain and cool.

Lastly, you’ll want to make the avocado crema. Add ingredients to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.

And now for the fun part, assembling the tacos. Use the wonton wrapper as the taco shell. Layer in the spicy ‘ahi poke and top with avocado crema. You can opt to top with furikake and green onions as well.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between poke tacos and traditional tacos?

Poke tacos differ from traditional tacos in terms of their filling. While traditional tacos often feature seasoned meats or vegetables, poke tacos are filled with marinated raw fish, typically sushi-grade tuna. The flavors and ingredients used in poke tacos are influenced by Hawaiian and Asian cuisines.

Can I use any type of fish for poke tacos?

While poke tacos often uses tuna, you can experiment with other types of fish as well. Salmon, tako (octopus), or shrimp can be used as alternative options for the fish filling. Just ensure that the fish is fresh and suitable for raw consumption.

Is it necessary to marinate the fish for poke tacos?

Marinating the fish is a key step in preparing poke tacos as it infuses the fish with flavor and enhances its taste. Marinating the fish for at least 15-30 minutes allows the flavors to penetrate the fish and adds complexity to the dish.
