Mahalo to Foodland Hawai’i for sponsoring this post. As always, thoughts and opinions are my own.

Make an Ube Milkshake for Dessert or a Snack

If you’ve never heard of ube before, you’re in for a real treat! It’s a bright purple yam that originated in the Philippines and has since made a splash on the food scene. And while you may think “yuck” when you think about adding a yam to a sweet dish, trust me, ube is so delicious in desserts. It boasts a sweet and vanilla flavor and the purple color adds a unique touch to whatever you put it in.

I’m all for ending my day with something sweet — or enjoying an afternoon pick-me-up. That’s where this recipe comes in! I’ve already shared dishes like ube cheesecake, ube crinkle cookies, and ube glazed air fryer donuts. Make my ube shake when you’re craving something sweet but can’t be fussed to bake something.

All you need to do is throw all of the ingredients into a blender, then let it work its magic. You’ll have a delicious dessert or snack option ready to go in under 5 minutes!

Ube Milkshake Key Ingredients

Vanilla Ice Cream. All good milkshakes begin with ice cream. I’m using vanilla, as it complements the natural flavors in ube really nicely.  Maika’i Organic Coconut Milk. You can find this at your local Foodland. For added creaminess! Ube Halaya. A mixture of ube, milk, sugar, and butter — I swear by my homemade version. Ube Extract. For even more added ube flavor. If you’re having trouble finding it locally, I recommend buying it online. Vanilla Extract. For more warm vanilla flavor! Save some money and make homemade vanilla extract. ube milkshake ingredients

How to make a perfect ube drink

Combine the ingredients. Place the vanilla ice cream, coconut milk, ube halaya, ube extract, and vanilla extract into a blender.

Blend. Pulse until your ube milkshake is well combined and smooth. To be enjoyed with or without a dollop of whipped cream!

Tips

Make it lighter. If you want to lighten up your milkshake — or have it as a smoothie for breakfast — you can omit the ice cream and use milk instead. You could also add a sprinkle of granola if you do want to enjoy it in the morning. Add extra toppings. I mentioned that you can add some whipped cream on top of your milkshake. You could also add chopped nuts, sprinkles, or chocolate sauce to make it a truly decadent dessert!  If you don’t have a blender, you can also make this dessert in a food processor or with a handheld mixer. You could try a stand mixer too. Make sure to use ube halaya. You may be tempted to simply chop up some cooked ube and throw it in the blender. While you could technically do this, keep in mind that the milkshake won’t be as sweet. Remember that I have an easy-to-follow recipe for ube halaya that you can try at home!

Frequently asked Questions about Ube Milkshakes

How do you pronounce ube?

If you’re wondering the correct way to say it, ube is pronounced, “ooh-beh.” It’s 2 syllables with an emphasis on the second syllable.

What does an ube milkshake taste like?

Thanks to the ube and other ingredients, ube milkshakes taste like a mixture of vanilla and coconut. They’re sweet and also a bit nutty, almost as if it contains nut butter. The flavor combination is very unique — I have yet to taste anything like it.

What is ube flavor?

Ube has a mild taste and is similar to vanilla. It also boasts a slightly nutty flavor. The vegetable isn’t as dense as sweet potatoes, and most folks agree that it contains more moisture. One thing that’s for sure is that it’s a very unique yam!

What is the purple ice cream in Hawai’i?

None other than ube ice cream! Ube is really popular on the Island, and you’ll be able to find the flavor at most ice cream parlors. The bright purple color is completely natural and so stunning to look at. Not to mention, it tastes great.
