Apple is preparing to launch its very own custom-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip with the iPhone 17 Pro, releasing in 2025, according to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong International Securities, who says the move will see Apple cut its reliance on Broadcom, who currently supply the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips for the iPhone.
As reported by MacRumors, Pu believes Apple will expand its in-house Wi-Fi chip to the entire iPhone 18 series in 2026, although no specifics about the new chip were shared.
Wi-Fi 7, which is in its early states, is the successor to Wi-Fi 6, offering significant advancements in speed, capacity, and efficiency.
The launch of an Apple-designed Wi-Fi chip will see the iPhone maker further drop its dependencies on third-party suppliers for chips, following after most notably Apple dropped Intel from its Mac lineup beginning in 2020 in favor of its own custom processors, the M-series.
