CR2023 AirTag batteries the lowdown on which to choose.
AirTags are getting to the point now, depending how they’ve been used and environmental conditions, where their batteries are going to need replacing.
I’ve changed my batteries a couple of times, and the CR2023 coin batteries are readily available from most outlets, but you need to be careful on the make and type you choose.
CR2023 batteries are pretty much in everything, from car alarm fobs, children toys, clocks and much more, with this in mind Duracell have started coating the edges of the batteries in a water dissolvable bitterant - meaning the battery becomes repulsive when placed in the mouth of pets, young children and vulnerable adults, the bitterant can be removed, using an alcohol wipe or glasses cleaner (from the battery not the mouth of the being trying to consume it).
Not all battery manufactures are labelling the packaging saying the batteries are coated, and some do not coat the batteries. Duracell do label some of their packets with "Compatible with Apple AirTag"
If you do install a CR2032 which is covered in the bitterant you’ll not hear the initial chirp, when you close the metal lid on the AirTag. First step is to try and clean the bitterant off, refit in the AirTag and listen for the chirp. If all fails you’ll have to buy another brand, keeping the other battery for the car key fob.
