Apple is reportedly gearing up to release its first-ever mixed-reality Apple Vision Pro headset within the next two months, with the device expected to hit shelves in the US in late February ahead of an international rollout in the years to follow.
Despite the headset not having been officially released, rumors suggest that a second-generation is already in the works, with a launch expected in 2027.
According to a report from The Elec, Apple is slated to transition to improved RGB OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) technology by 2027. Unlike conventional displays, in RGB OLEDoS, the RGB subpixels generate both light and color, eliminating the need for a color filter and maintaining overall brightness.
For the second-generation Apple Vision Pro, the iPhone maker is slated to use RGB OLEDoS displays that incorporate organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on a silicon substrate.
Currently, Apple relies on Sony for its WOLED+CF displays, potentially limiting the production capacity of Apple Vision Pro units. The report indicates that RGB OLEDoS faces similar supply chain constraints, as Samsung is presently the sole producer of these panels, predominantly utilized by the US military.
It’s important to remember that these details are based on rumors and unofficial reports. Apple’s plans can pivot, so while this insight offers a glimpse, the final outcome might differ.
