Archery returned to the Parapan American Games after being excluded from Lima 2019 due to poor participation in Toronto 2015.
Forty-eight archers from 17 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela) competed in Santiago Chile from November 19-22 with their best archers in recurve open, compound open, and W1 events.
World Archery Americas President Maria Emma Gaviria thanked Pan Am Sports, the International Paralympic Committee and World Archery for making archery’s return to the Parapan American Games possible.
Teams
The first medals up for grabs were the mixed teams in both recurve and compound open. The United States dominated both categories. They were followed on the podium by Colombia and Mexico in recurve, and by Ecuador and Colombia in compound.
Individuals
In the women’s W1 final, Tracy Otto of the United States and Mariela Lopez of Chile faced each other. The American won the title and the ticket to Paris in a match that ended with a score of 101 to 83 points.
In the men’s W1, the second ranked Eugenio Santana Franco of Brazil defeated the favorite Jason Tabansky (USA) and secured the qualification to Paris. Victor Saiz of Chile finished third.
The biggest surprise came in the compound women’s event, with Costa Rica’s Pilar Riveros winning by one point over Paralympic Tokyo runner-up Mariana Zúñiga of Chile. In the bronze medal match, Wendy Gardner (USA) defeated Colombia’s Yasneide Peñaranda.
Top-ranked Kevin Polish (USA) dominated the compound men’s category from the start of the competition until the gold medal match. Costa Rica’s Diego Quesada won the silver medal, while Canada’s Kyle Tremblay took the bronze.
The recurve women’s open event concluded with an unexpected 6-0 victory by Peru’s Daniela Campos over Colombia’s experienced Monica Daza. This was the only gold medal won by Peru among all sports at the Games. Candice Caesar of the United States took the bronze medal.
Mexico’s Samuel Molina defeated former world champion Eric Bennett of the United States 6 points to 2 to win the gold medal in the recurve men’s competition. In the match that decided the bronze medal and the last place for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Colombia’s Hector Ramirez was superior to Brazil’s Heriberto Roca with a final score of 6-2.
