The installation of a traffic light at Sonoran Desert Parkway and North John Wayne Parkway now gives motorists the green light.

The traffic signal was activated today.

Stop signs and traffic cones that cluttered the intersection yesterday have been ditched and replaced with fluorescent signals and stripes in the roadway.

Crews began installing the long-awaited light last month, just weeks after Ak-Chin Community Council members approved a permit they had previously said would be unlawful.

Other work around town might affect travelers:

Garvey Avenue between Estrella Parkway to Condrey Avenue remains closed to all traffic for roadwork. It is scheduled to reopen May 1.   Road construction on Heritage Lane in the Heritage District is set to last until Saturday.   Nighttime crack-seal work on John Wayne Parkway between West Smith Enke Road and West Steen Road will restrict lanes traveling both directions between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. until Jan. 8.

The Arizona Department of Transportation recently announced locals will face more lane restrictions on John Wayne Parkway in the coming weeks. Crews will be paving the roadway heading in and out of town Jan. 3 to Jan. 5.

ADOT reports there are no freeway closures scheduled in Phoenix-area through New Year’s Day weekend for those driving north of Maricopa.
