Maricopa police arrested a man in Senita after reported gunfire early this morning.

Officers responded to multiple calls of someone firing a gun near Santa Rosa Parkway and Elizabeth Avenue around midnight. Upon arrival, they continued to hear gunshots and found shell casings on the patio, according to city spokesperson Monica Williams.

Police arrested the man, who was not identified, after he exited the back door of the house.

No injuries were reported. Neighbors in Senita and Glennwilde reported hearing at least a dozen gunshots.

Charges were not immediately available. However, shooting a firearm within or into city limits is a felony, according to state law.

It is also known as Shannon’s Law. In 1999, 14-year-old Shannon Smith was killed in her backyard by a stray bullet shot from one mile away.

Breaking this law carries penalties of up to $150,000 in fines and at least one year in prison. Depending on prior convictions and other factors like who was nearby, prison time could go up to as many as six years.
