An Alterra home was the far-and-away winner of this year’s Holiday Homes on Parade contest after 32,000 people voted for their favorite yuletide light show in town.
The winning home at 44781 W. Applegate Road won with 10,453 votes, nearly 33 percent.
Homeowner Crystal McCauley had one word to describe her reaction to being crowned the big winner: “Surprised.”
She and her mother, Deedee Owen, spent six to eight hours a day, four days a week, putting up elaborate decorations to get their Island of Misfit Toys-themed display up and running. It comes complete with a merry-go-round of Teddy Bears that her daughters loaned for the season.
Asked if she had any idea why she earned more than 10,000 votes, she bluntly replied, “I don’t know.”
McCauley wins $250 in gift cards and cash from local sponsors.
This year, 40 homes entered their dazzling lights and sparkling holiday decorations in the contest that InMaricopa and the city of Maricopa joined in co-sponsoring for the first time.
A home at 44255 W. Sedona Trail garnered 7,919 votes and came in second place. The bronze medalists at 43483 W. Chisolm Drive received 3,606 votes.
