Ireland is best known for its magnificent castles full of history and myths, one of the most well known being Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle is the largest castle in Ireland, that was recently transformed into a hotel in 1939. I had the amazing chance to stay at the Lodge At Ashford Castle but was a little disappointed with the service and the limited chances to get to go in and see the actual castle. However before I stayed here I stayed in another castle, only a lot smaller, but full of hospitality, Ballyseede Castle.
Ballyseede Castle, one of the best-known castle hotels in Ireland, has a history dating back to the 1590s. Set on thirty acres of woodland in the heart of Kerry, the castle has been wonderfully transformed into a luxurious hotel. The castle is family-run with a very relaxing feel about it. The castle has four friendly estate dogs, who roam around the castle property. Mr Higgins, the Irish Wolfhound, is always willing to play with his sidekick, Einstein. The Castle almost has a magical atmosphere with some of the most kindest and loving people you will ever meet. You could spend a day just sitting in one of the many extravagant rooms drinking tea or walking around in the gardens with the smell of the forest surrounding you.
Some of my favorite memories would be the breakfast at the castle and late night card games in the drawing rooms. The wonderful staff will come out occasionally to offer you hot chocolate or biscuits, which are delicious. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Waking up to a wonderful breakfast in their breakfast hall is a great way to start the day.
Overall my stay at Ballyseede Castle was splendid and I was able to learn so much about the history of the families who have lived there in the past and those who continue to live their today. If you are looking for a wonderful place to stay in Kerry, Ballyseede Castle should be at the top of your list.
