Arsenal are interested in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The former Sky Sports Italy journalist claims that the Nigerian has signed a contract extension with the Serie A club, and a release clause between €130 and €140 million has been included in the deal.

Arsenal could do with a prolific striker next month to bolster their chances of winning the title, but Napoli are not selling Osimhen in January, and suitors will have to wait until the summer to have a chance of signing him, provided they meet his release clause.

“The expectation is for Victor Osimhen to have very good chances to leave Napoli in 2024 – not in January – to leave in the summer,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“The new deal will include a release clause in the region of €130m-€140m.

“The interest from Chelsea and Arsenal for the summer remains, let us see if other clubs will join the race too.”

The 24-year-old ended last term with 31 goals in 39 games across all competitions and has bagged eight goals in 17 appearances this season.

Napoli won the Serie A title last term after a long title drought, thanks to his goals, and Arsenal are desperate to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

A top hitman would make all the difference, but whether the Gunners are ready to splash the cash and break their transfer record on a number 9 remains to be seen given their Financial Fair Play concerns.

Osimhen has also struggled with injuries and fitness concerns since 2020-21, and Arsenal may need to think twice before breaking the bank for Osimhen.

He is unlikely to struggle with the pace and physicality of the Premier League, but whether he can remain fit for a full season remains to be seen.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year came close to joining Arsenal in 2015 and could finally make the move in the coming months if all parties involved can manage to get a deal done.
