Jamie Carragher fell for a fake X (formerly known as Twitter) account that claimed Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has picked up a long-term injury.
The Athletic journalist David Ornstein is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to news concerning the Gunners, and a naughty X user made a parody account in his name and username on the social media platform.
Carragher fell for it like most people, reposting the news before realising his mistake and quickly deleting it.
Gary Neville got wind of a screenshot before his fellow Sky Sports pundit took off the evidence, and he took to X to react thus:
Liverpool host Arsenal tomorrow and Carragher would have been happy for a moment after thinking that Saliba would miss the clash to a knock.
The Reds will fancy their chances against the North London club playing at Anfield on Saturday, but being without the Frenchman would have surely dealt a blow on Arsenal given how crucial he has been to their campaign so far.
The 22-year-old has featured in every of their 17 Premier League games so far in 2023-24 and has not missed a single minute, and he will be looking forward to helping his side to much-needed victory tomorrow.
Carragher would have been disappointed to find out that the news is fake as he knows the importance of Saliba to Arsenal and their title race.
Liverpool are also very much in the race, and Saturday’s outcome could have a huge say on where both teams end up finishing the campaign.
Saliba featured in 27 Premier League games last term before a back injury in March ruled him out of the remainder of the campaign.
His unavailability dealt a massive blow on Arsenal’s campaign as they won just five of their last 11 league games and missed out on the title.
They cannot afford to lose him to an injury this term and will hope Carragher’s wishes never come to pass.
