In 2022 the Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival starts on February 1, 2022 and ends on January 21, 2023. Traditionally, there is a 12 year zodiac cycle in which each year is represented by an animal. In the zodiac cycle 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.
People born during the year of the Tiger are said to be competitive, courageous and ambitious. Their competitive nature is balanced by their generosity and sense of justice; they love helping others.
The Chinese New Year marks the end of the winter when the fields are cleared and prepared to plant new seeds or the start of spring. The new year is celebrated for two weeks and ends with the Lantern Festival. In China banks, offices and many stores are closed for a week. During this time, families and neighbors gather to wish others good luck and blessings in the coming year.
Leading up to New Year's Eve, people clean their homes to symbolically sweep or wash away bad luck from the preceding year. On New Year's Eve (this year it's January 31) families eat a big feast and exchange red envelopes with money inside to bring good fortune. Dumplings are always served as they symbolize wealth. Which is a delicious way to bring good luck!
People celebrate with fireworks and firecrackers which are used to scare off bad luck. They also enjoy parades with Dragon dances. On New Year's Day, more fireworks and firecrackers can be heard and time is spent greeting and feasting with neighbors.
Other countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year are: South Korea, Vietnam and Mongolia.
