Don’t Stay Stuck in an Art Rut or Block
It’s all too easy to get stuck in a rut with our art, churning out work that is no longer a challenge or joy to us (I believe that challenge and joy are closely intertwined). Let’s face it: pushing ourselves into unknown territory is uncomfortable or even scary.
Our art practice can even get sidelined by creative block, where we are frozen in the face of artistic challenges. These challenges appear to us to be problems that we cannot solve, and we can turn away from making art for long stretches of time to avoid the issue.
Both of these scenarios are tragic because they stall our growth and take away valuable time from our art journey. But what’s an artist to do?
Seek help from other artists. Art is similar to playing an instrument, practicing yoga, or participating in a sport—everyone needs coaches, mentors, and guides. Even the most famous and successful artists, yogis, pianists, or athletes have one or more people that they look to for advice, support, and feedback. This helps them keep growing and improving, and in turn they may be supporting others in their field who look to them for mentorship.
I derive so much satisfaction in mentoring other artists and watching their artistic practices thrive! Whether through one-on-one coaching or group coaching programs, I find mentoring abstract artists to be fulfilling and rewarding—for me as well as my clients. Likewise, I find true value in the mentorship I receive from my own art and business mentors and advisors.
