During the holiday season, we often hear, “jJoy to the world.” I think that we artists are driven by a desire to bring joy to the world with our art. Ask a few artist friends—and ask yourself—what your highest aims for your art are, and I’m willing to bet that each artist mentions adding joy and positivity to the world. It’s a noble and worthy goal!

What might be surprising to you is that you can more effectively achieve this goal by doing something that may seem unrelated: bonding with your fellow artists. Let me explain.

Ways to Bond with Other Artists

Rather than visit galleries or museum shows on your own, visit them with artist friends. You can gather inspiration from nature together by taking walks, visiting botanical gardens, or doing plein air sketching. You can do work side by side in a coworking session or workshop, whether in person or online.

You can also gain powerful inspiration by sharing non-visual art inspiration with artist peers. For example, you can attend performing art events, read and discuss books, or share music that you love. All of this can inform your art and enrich the “input” that feeds your imagination and intellect.

The Benefits of Not Going it Alone

You may have read the previous section and thought, “Oh, I do those things, but on my own or with my partner.” However, experiencing inspirational events together with other artists amplifies both the enthusiasm and the inspiration. When you hear their feedback, your mind becomes open to new ideas and opinions. It’s a richer experience!

Students in my mentorship program often find that they gain great inspiration from being part of a small community where they are exposed to other artists. A safe and supportive space to share work and solicit feedback is fertile ground for growing a successful art practice! Artists need a community where they can ask questions, share concerns, and get tips that will help them move their work forward.

Your Peace and Joy Will Manifest in the Work

If you take the time to find and create a supportive circle of artist friends and truly bond with them through art, you will find greater peace and confidence in your work. This feeling will be communicated to the viewer through the work, creating the joyful impact you want to make in the world.
