Mitochondria Gallery is pleased to present our final exhibition of 2023, “Place of Repose” a group exhibition. This exhibition features sculptures and paintings from contemporary artists from Africa and the African Diaspora. Comprising of small to large scale works, this exhibition features abstract textile sculptures as well as figurative paintings that examine the human condition using styles of abstraction, realism, cubism, and surrealism to represent their subjects.
The “Place of Repose” is an ecosystem where the weary find a glimpse of refuge. This exhibition offers two perspectives: first, as a reminder to live in the present, reflect, and appreciate life as it is; and second, to actively make time to unwind and participate in rest, both physically and mentally.
This exhibition features new paintings and sculptures from Roberto Pare (Limbe, Cameroon), Okoye Chukwuemeka John (Uyo, Nigeria), Manzi Leon (Kigali, Nigeria), Iniobong Usoro (Lagos, Nigeria), Sphephelo Mnguni (Cape Town, SouthAfrica), Nduka Ikechukwu (Nsuka, Nigeria), and Benjamin Niyomugabo (Kigali, Rwanda).

Contemplation of domesticity. 2023As we reflect on the year, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve you all and your continued support, which helps us further expand the platform for art from Africa and the African diaspora. “Place of Repose,” is a reminder for us to remember to rest and take time to nurture our mental and physical wellbeing, which is very important, especially during the holiday season.
Place of Repose is on view from December 20th to January 13th, 2023. The opening reception in Houston, TX is on Wednesday, 7:00 Pm to 9:00 Pm on the 20th of December.
