Unfortunately, removing turf is not as simple as just cutting around the grass and pulling up the turf. Luckily for you we’ve put together this simple guide covering the 3 most common methods of turf removal:
Manual digging
The most labour intensive but by far the most commonplace method of turf removal. Achieved by taking a quality garden spade and cutting squares into the grass (about 25cm x 25cm), each square is then dug out individually. A bit of strength and some elbow grease and you’ll have the turf up in no time!
Pro tip: Saturate the lawn fully a couple of days before attempting to remove the turf, the moisture in the soil will make the whole removal process much easier!
Solarisation
If manual digging sounds too labour intensive for you, then you can always let nature take its course and opt for solarisation instead! Whilst this method is significantly less labour intensive, it does require much more time. From start to finish this process can take 6-8 weeks, and that’s if you’re getting a good amount of sunlight each day. Although lengthy, the process is simple, cut the grass as short as possible then cover with a sheet of clear plastic. The heat from the sun will kill off the turf beneath the sheet, along with any weeds! Easy as can be.
Smothering
It’s worth noting that if you live in an area with poor sunlight, solarisation definitely will not work as a turf removal method for your project. Smothering, however, is doing the exact opposite. By covering the turf in a light-excluding material like tarpaulin and denying it of sunlight, the heat trapped beneath the sheet will create a similar environment to that of solarisation. The temperature will ultimately cause the grass to dry up and die beneath it. Whilst easy to do and more accessible to those with fewer daylight hours, this method is still time intensive so it’s important to plan ahead.
