Did you know falls are the leading cause of injury and death among adults 65 and older? In fact, according to the CDC, more than one in four of these adults fall each year. This is a significant problem that can lead to serious concerns including limited mobility, broken bones, head injuries, and unfortunately, even death for some. Falls can also have psychological consequences. Older adults may develop a fear of falling, leading them to limit their activities and become more stationary. This can cause a decline in overall health and quality of life.

Fortunately, there are steps to prevent falls among older adults. Here are five suggestions we recommend for preventing falls:

Understand the risk factors and how to reduce them.

Consult your doctor about any health conditions that may increase the risk of falling. Muscle weakness, vision problems, poor balance, and certain medications can all lead to a fall.

Strengthen your legs and build balance.

This is another point a doctor can weigh in on. Ask them what they think is the best exercise program for you or your loved one. A routine like the Stable and Able” program Susan Bell, Program Director at Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal, created could make a huge difference in efforts to prevent falling. She uses a combination of chair stretching, balancing exercises, and more during sessions with residents at the community.

Install grab bars.

Areas such as the bathroom and kitchen are good places to start. Place grab bars in other areas to provide extra support as you move throughout your home.

Wear nonslip shoes.

Shoes with rubber soles are the safest option and will improve traction on slippery surfaces. Nonslip shower mats and rugs are also great items to help you move safely.

Declutter “high traffic” areas.

Make sure there aren’t unnecessary items on the floor like small rugs or extension cords. The layout of furniture could also lead to falls. Conduct or schedule a home safety assessment to get a better idea of what improvements are needed.

At Commonwealth Senior Living, fall prevention is among our highest priorities. If home improvements for fall prevention are no longer an option in your home, please know we are here to help your family find a new environment where they feel completely safe and supported. “Our communities were specifically built with comfort and safety in mind. That means sturdy handrails in every hallway, clear lighting, and readily available associates to help get to and from activities. Our goal is to improve the lives of seniors, their families, and each other. This means thinking through any obstacle that could create an issue for our residents like rugs, cords, and clutter. You won’t see that in our communities,” says Kristie Annis, Executive Director at Commonwealth Senior Living at the Eastern Shore.
