‘Blessed Memorial Day’ seems more to be a more appropriate greeting than `Happy Memorial’ day, since remembering the war dead is anything but `happy.’
While you are enjoying this long weekend, a kick-off to the promise of the sweet warm days of summer ahead, consider the astrology of `Memorial Day.’
There are variable dates connected with war-dead-remembrance. Yet ALL dates reflect the astrological signature of death, Scorpio and Pluto.
According to many sources the first public honoring of occurred in Charleston South Caroline a month after the Confederacy surrendered. This poignant first gesture of care originated from the freed slaves on behalf of the fallen Union soldiers: “Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May 1 1865 in Charleston SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for two weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10, 000 people led by 2, 800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated. “

May 1st of ANY year is a sacred `cross-quarter-day’ on the solar calendar representing the mid-point between the start of spring and the start of summer. Among the Celts and Pagans and other nature religions, Beltane, or May 1st reflects a magical time when the veil between the two worlds of the living and dead is blurred. In other words, a mystical time of connecting with the dead, just like what happens six months later, on Samhain, on October 31st/November 1st. Of course, we moderns connote Samhain with `Halloween’ and mark this ancient sacred day of the dead with masks and tricks and treats.
Remarkably, the first war-dead-remembrance initiated by the freed blacks occurred when the planet of death, Pluto was conjunct the sun. That happens ONLY every 268 years around May first.
Freedom planets, Uranus and Jupiter were forming an opposition announcing to all the end of one level of oppression with the end of the American Civil War. And, Saturn was conjunct the North Node in Libra signaling a new structure of balance and fairness. Can you imagine the dedication it took to rebury the bodies? Both Mercury and Venus were retrograde in the sign of embodiment; redoing something through the lens of devotion and love….
Memorial Day was first `codified’ officially on May 5th, 1868, by General John A. Logan when he called for a day to remember fallen soldiers at the end of the month. Logan stated; “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.”
The chart for May 5th, 1868 features a Scorpio Moon representing emotional connection to the meaning of death and AGAIN the sun is conjunct Pluto EXACTLY at 15 degrees of Taurus, ” An old man vainly trying to reveal the mysteries.”
Additionally this Sun/Pluto is exactly semi-sextiling Neptune conjunct Mars. Of course Mars represents war, and, Neptune Transcendence. The date of this declaration by the General begs the question; How do we remember the War dead, and, perhaps, can we ever dispel ( Neptune)with the root of war?
Known as `Decoration Day’ for many years, this day of honoring coincided with the graves of the dead being strewn with flowers. I remember my Mom taking us the cemetery to remember our relatives…on `Decoration Day’….no matter who they were or how they died.
Today we have a `long weekend’ thanks to an act of Congress effective January 1 1971:
