A wedding is a momentous occasion for most people. It is an important chapter in the story of their lives. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a hugely transformative event. And such a major event has to be timed perfectly, shouldn’t it? For Westerners, this may sound odd. Any time is fine to get married, they would say. But in India, especially among Hindus, any time just won’t do to tie the knot. It has to happen at an auspicious time, a time determined by the planets and stars and a pandit or astrologer!

Subha Muhurtham, or Shubh Muhurat, is the name of this auspicious time. Among Hindus, almost all important events are scheduled during such auspicious times. To find the Muhurtham for a particular event, people consult the Hindu almanac or Panchang. Many factors are taken into account when choosing the Subha Muhurtham. As per the Panchang, there are auspicious dates and times for all Hindu ceremonies, including weddings.
