Atlanta is still a metropolis of activity. I’ve lived in the Big Peach since 1997, and still have yet to complete my Atlanta bucket list. If you’re looking for something to do during your Atlanta staycation or simply something to do with visiting guests, check out all the things we’ve been enjoying around the city.

Atlanta Things to Do

I recommended to RedFin that groups enjoy themselves at The Escape Game. The high-tech, artful escape rooms at the Atlanta Battery are completely immersive and worth the price of admission. Grab a group and be sure to try out Playground to feel like a kid all over again or best the miners at their own game in Gold Rush. Be warned; the latter has a lot of math in it… and I was TERRIBLE!

Get in some Fall Family Fun Days at The Rock Ranch south of the city. You can bring your pumpkin to the National Pumpkin Destruction Days after Halloween, or enjoy their HUGE light displays and Conestoga wagon rides during the holiday season. In 2019, we visited during the Country Christmas Nights celebration and Breakfast with Santa, and it was nothing less than enchanting. I can’t recommend a weekend staycation more… it’s perfection.

You’ll also want to take in a show with one of the professional theaters around Atlanta. While Broadway tours make their way to The Fox each year, there are also amazing companies like City Springs Theatre that host some of your favorite shows and new revues you’ll want to catch.

Discover history at Fernbank, Atlanta’s natural history museum. My kids love the Georgia history exhibit, filled with prehistoric creatures and natural settings from around our state. Among Red’s favorite visits to Fernbank, we explored the 3D film about Pterosaurs and walked through the exhibit to see the 33ft wingspan of the giant Quetzalcoatlus.

Something we don’t do often, but LOVE to do is visit Medieval Times. Our kiddos have been about three times, but trekking over to the East side of the city will show you a fabulous time at the dinner show featuring a Queen instead of a King. Jousting, the torture museum and more… it’s so much fun!

Something WAY off the grid would be glassblowing. We went to Decatur Glassblowing and with a course for two, learned glassblowing techniques, and even took home some of our own creations.  Chase made a gorgeous glass flower, and we both made very pretty paperweights, which helped us learn how to use the wooden block. Make sure to watch the video to see how lava-hot the glass actually was!

Still have a lack of ideas? There’s a great FREE book called 101 Things To Do in Atlanta that you can pick up to see even more things around Atlanta.  After living in your home city for a little while, one tends to forget about all the surrounding awesomeness.  Sure, if a friend or relative comes to visit, you’ll buy admission to the Georgia Aquarium, head to the Dwarf House for Breakfast, or even take a hike up Stone Mountain. Download the book and see what piques your interest!
