One of the things my kids love to do every summer is explore one of the local farms and go blueberry picking near Atlanta.

Since we live in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, Berry Patch Farms is not very far away.

We have been to this farm before for their pumpkin patch in October, but never for berry picking. While riding on the hay ride, we encircled rows and rows of berry patch.

My wife made a mental note to come back in the summer and go berry picking. This was our first berry picking session for the summer and we ended up hauling four pounds of berries home.

Located in Woodstock, GA, Berry Patch Farm is a beautiful property. There is a mostly paved driveway that leads you from the road to a fruit stand, water tower, playground and small farmhouse.

The fruit stand is where you pay for the berries by the pound. When we visited, they charged $3.90 per pound.

This is a nominal fee for such a fun activity for the kids.

What should you expect when you go berry picking at Berry Patch Farms?

If you have been to the pumpkin patch in October, you will need to dial down your expectations. There are way less people, no food stands, no rides and we didn’t see any farm animals.

It’s just you and a bucket.

Of course my kids had to make it a competition to see who could get the most berries in the bucket.

When we were there in mid July, the blueberries were growing like crazy.

Berry Patch Farms also has blackberry bushes, but the fruit at this time of year was not mature and not ripe enough. We took a few blackberries home, but they were a little sour. On the other hand, the blueberries we extremely ripe and delicious.

The blueberry bushes are very mature. Some of the blueberry bushes are 10 feet high.

It really paid off to be tall as some of the lower sections were very well picked. To help my 7 year old out, I would pull on some of the branchs so he could grab some large, ripe berries.

Of course he ate some immediately. I checked with the person behind the counter, the blueberry bushes are never sprayed with pesticides

I will say, one thing I that I was a little disappointed with was that they didn’t have any of their hand pies available like they do in October. These are some of the most delicious hand pies and something I look forward to. I guess we will be coming back in October!

One thing to note, there was a lot of poison ivy. I saw it literally everywhere. The most astonishing thing- none of us got a rash. They have poison ivy soap in the bathroom in the farm house, which we all used once we finished berry picking. If I would do it again, I would have worn long sleeves and shoes instead of flip flops.
