Did you know that eating Black Eyed Peas on New Year’s Day is said to bring good luck, health, and abundance? They’re a traditional southern side dish for the holiday, and folks have been making them for generations. If you grew up in the South, your Mama probably told you to eat your “Hoppin’ John” for good luck! I appreciate her version, but here’s the twist to make it easier! These Instant Pot Black Eyed Peas are quicker, tastier, and still bring all the luck you need.

The Instant Pot is a great tool for cutting time. Traditionally, beans take tons of time and prep work. The traditional way of cooking Black Eyed Peas is very time-consuming. However, the Instant Pot really cuts that time. You’ll have a tasty (and lucky) side dish in 30 minutes. This recipe also makes a large portion, serving up to 16 people, so throw a New Year’s party to celebrate.

They’re smoky with a hint of spice and have plenty of flavor, thanks to the fat that comes from the ham. Southern tradition never tasted so good!

Tips For Making Instant Pot Black Eyed Peas

Of course, for this recipe, you’ll need an Instant Pot pressure cooker. I use the traditional 7-quart size. The Instant Pot is going to do all of the heavy lifting for you. Don’t worry about prepping your beans or soaking them ahead of time. It has an automatic sensor and presets that you’ll take advantage of.

Recipe Variations

If you don’t have ham hock, feel free to use a different fatty meat instead. I use the ham hock from my Bourbon Holiday Ham. Fatty thick cuts of bacon work well too. If you’re not into bacon or ham, you can change it to a more vegetarian version. Use Shitake Mushrooms for a more natural earthy flavor. They’re great at carrying spices and seasoning for that meat-like taste.

How To Add More Spice To Your Black Eyed Peas

Jalapeños can easily be added to this dish if you want some spice. Chop 1 jalapeño, removing the seeds and discarding the stem. Add it with the other recipe ingredients and follow the same directions. Ancho and Poblano peppers work well, too.

How To Store Leftovers

Transfer any leftover Black Eyed Peas into an airtight food storage container. For the best freshness, enjoy the peas within 4-5 days of cooking them. To reheat the black eyed peas, use the microwave on high for 1-2 minutes.

Black Eyed Peas can also be frozen for up to three months. Keep the peas in a freezer-safe container towards the back of the freezer where temperatures are more stable. Let them thaw overnight before reheating again.

Tips For Using An Instant Pot

No doubt, pressure cooking can be daunting if you’ve never done it before. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be pumping out tasty, easy meals in no time. Here are a few basic tips that you should know if you’ve never used an Instant Pot before:

The steam that is released from the Instant Pot is extremely hot. Be careful not to put any body parts in the path of the steam. Replace the sealing ring on your Instant Pot regularly.  The sealing ring on an Instant Pot is made from silicone, which is ideally suited to the purpose because it’s heat resistant and flexible. Replace it regularly to ensure the seal is secure.
