So you’re planning a gala, fundraiser, concert, or other event, with musical entertainment to perform on the stage, and the musicians give you a backline list, or rider. What does that mean?

What is meant by “backline?”

Backline refers to everything needed to put on a show, for the exception of the PA system* and monitors. This includes amplifiers, keyboards, drums, stands, outboard rack gear, and even stage risers. For a DJ performance, turntables and mixers would also be included. The term, “backline,” originated in the 50s and 60s when speakers and amplifiers for the instruments were lined up in the back of the stage because the PA systems could only support the vocalists. Modern PA systems are more than capable of handling instruments as well. Current day’s term does not elude to the placement on stage. Rather, gear may be located anywhere, on or near the stage, and still be considered “backline.”

*A public address (PA) system is comprised of microphones, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related equipment to amplify sound.

When is backline a consideration?

Performers traveling on their own tour would usually carry all of the needed equipment with them. Backline riders come into play when entertainers are asked to travel to an event for a one-time show. Because it would be too complicated and costly to have all of their own equipment shipped to the event, it’s industry standard to have the host provide the gear. Another case where backline would be required might be a music showcase where multiple performers are playing back-to-back. The use of rentals would be helpful in transitioning the bands so that additional sound checks would be avoided.

Where can gear be obtained?

There are plenty of backline rental companies to be found in all major geographical markets, whose business purpose is providing gear for events and fulfilling riders! If you’re working with an audio visual (AV) company to service your event, it’s likely that they will either provide or obtain the backline equipment so you don’t have to!

Who designates the requirements?

The performers will usually have very specific requests for their gear. The lists will be supplied to the hosting party directly, or through their booking agent. These requests may be as detailed as certain brands and models. Sometimes, they may also include an alternate option, in case the preferred is unavailable. In some instances, there may even be a “do not use” list.

Take-aways

The take-away here is that planning an event including a performer may also require backline considerations. The details of who is responsible for providing this gear should be worked out and communicated clearly at the beginning of the booking process. If the AV company you’re working with is handling the performers’ backline, then they will quote that in their price. But, if you are planning out the details on your own, make sure you account for the added expense of renting the backline equipment when determining the budget for the event to avoid any sticker-shock after-the-fact!
