Killer Fashion Style
Catch the killer fashion style from this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival – off runway!
We love going to fashion festivals. LOVE! Fashion festivals are a street style photographer’s love-fest. There’s a ton of action backstage and we get to be voyeurs for a little while, documenting behind-the-scenes hair and make-up preparations. Runways are a dream, with pole position going to the official photographers and videographers who get first choice for marking their territory on the media riser. And while the media riser is the absolute best view in the house bar none, some of the most exciting runway shots are often those taken from various positions alongside the runway. Other than all that, the best fun of all is outside the halls and marquees with the latest styles from the fashion savvy on perpetual parade.
As both the entry point to the runway shows and the street style main stage, the festival plaza area is the playground for photographers keen to snap a little off-runway fashion action. Celebrities, front-row fashionistas and everyone else turning up to play here turn on fashion and style every bit as eye catching as those on the runways. Almost as important as what’s going on inside, the styling on show highlights individuality, big trends and how to wear them.
While we’re less interested in photographing those who have been paid to wear brands, it’s not always easy to tell. We’re looking for the individuals who choose their own sartorial pieces to structure a look. In the words of Bill Cunningham, famed photographer for The New York Times who started the whole street style thing: “The best fashion show is coming to life every day in the streets.”
We’re often asked, “How do you know who’s paid to wear something and who’s put themselves together and paid for their own outfits?” The answer is, you don’t. So, we can only do our best….
With all that in mind, here’s our take on some of the best off runway fashion styling we’ve captured at this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival. All images: Dimitra Koriozos.
