Everyone’s toenails grow at different speeds, so although there might not be a correct ‘when’ nails should be cut, there definitely is a correct ‘how’.

From ingrown nails to discomfort when walking, we see many issues in the clinic that stem from incorrectly trimmed nails. Because of this, we decided to put together a guide on the correct way to trim your nails.

4 tips to cut your nails correctly:

Clean your feet – our warm, sweaty feet are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, foot hygiene is extremely important, especially when we are about to take to them with a sharp instrument like nail clippers.
(Psst: If your feet are smelly, we’ve got more tips here)

Make sure you have a good pair of nail scissors or clippers – Our nails can be difficult to cut through so make sure you invest in a good pair of nail scissors or clippers to avoid any slips or mishaps when trimming your nails. Never use razor blades, knives or your kitchen scissors to trim your nails as this will often lead to injury.

Trim the nail straight across, and not down the sides – It's very important that you only cut across and not down to avoid injury and prevent the ingrowing of the nails.

File the edges of the nail smooth – Once you have cut straight across you can then file the edges of the nails smooth, giving a slightly rounded appearance. This will help stop the nail snagging and tearing and also prevent those unwanted holes in your socks.

Remember that if you have any difficulties seeing or reaching your toes, or have a health condition such as diabetes, then you really should be coming in to see us so we can manage your foot health (and nails) for you.

It is also important that you don’t attempt to trim your cuticles, or try and remove any ingrowing nails yourself.

If you have an ingrown nail, make an appointment and we will help you manage your nail.

Let's take a look at your feet.
