I love easy side dishes, especially when entertaining. Preparing it in advance if needs be and only needing to reheat it gently to serve. And when everyone goes wow, after sampling your most simple dish, the heart warms. 

This whipped sweet potatoes recipe does this perfectly.

Made with a few simple ingredients, I adore the smooth texture of whipped sweet potatoes. And together with a touch of maple syrup and warm spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, this budget-friendly recipe is fun and flavourful.

Whipped sweet potatoes offer a delicious blend of buttery, creamy, and fluffy goodness. This easy-to-prepare side dish holds a special place during holiday celebrations, but it is equally delightful for casual weeknight meals.

Difference Between Whipped And Mashed Sweet Potatoes?

The main difference between mashing and whipping sweet potatoes is the texture. Both techniques have their own benefits. 

We love good mashed sweet potatoes. Our version is buttery, creamy and full of savoury goodness. Typically using a potato masher, the texture of mashed sweet potatoes can be chunky or as smooth as you like. 

An alternative to mashed potatoes, whipping sweet potatoes is something new to me. I never thought to use a whisk or stand mixer to create mountains of delicious sweet potatoes! This technique will create a smoother, fluffier and never-lumpy version of sweet potato mash. 

Do You Boil Or Roast Sweet Potatoes First?

Roasting sweet potatoes definitely enhances the flavour. The heat caramelises the natural sugars in the sweet potatoes, creating a rich and complex taste. I love roasting sweet potatoes especially great with our maple hummus dressing.

In this recipe, I decided to boil sweet potatoes first before whipping only because I was short of time. However, you can of course roast them first. This technique will create a soft, sweet flesh that is perfect to whip.

Recipe Overview

Flavour/Texture: Sweet potatoes, when whipped, offer a light, fluffy, and creamy texture.

As for flavour, I’ve decided to go for a sweeter version of mashed sweet potatoes. The subtle hint of maple syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg add warmth and caramel tones which is super delicious.

Ease: Simple recipe with only a few steps to cook, whip and season sweet potatoes. 

Time: Allow approximately 30 minutes if you are boiling the sweet potatoes before whipping. However, if you want to roast the sweet potatoes first, then it will take at least twice as long.

These are the ingredients you need in whipped sweet potatoes:

Sweet potatoes: The most common sweet potato is the golden orange flesh sweet potato. It is sweeter and creamier than purple and white flesh sweet potatoes. This makes it a great choice for this whipped sweet potatoes recipe. 

Butter/Cream: We like fluffy AND creamy whipped sweet potatoes! So butter and heavy cream adds luscious flavour and velvety texture. 

Maple syrup: It may seem strange to add a sweetener to a naturally sweet root vegetable. However, maple syrup does more than add sweetness. The caramel tones of maple syrup enhance the natural flavours of whipped sweet potatoes. 

Cinnamon/Nutmeg: The aromatic and slightly sweet flavours of both cinnamon and nutmeg are incredible with sweet potatoes, just like getting a big hug with these warm spices in the dish.

Variations and Substitutions

Yams for sweet potato: Yams are commonly mistaken for sweet potatoes, but in fact, they are not the same vegetable. Yams are less sweet with a more starchy texture than sweet potatoes. I probably wouldn’t substitute sweet potatoes with yams as the drier texture will be harder to whip.

Vegan option: Use vegan butter and non-dairy cream to create a creamy texture. 

Maple syrup substitute: If you don’t have maple syrup available, add a little dark brown sugar. I prefer brown sugar over honey because of the subtle caramel flavours. 

Replacement for chives: Try parsley or sage. 

Instructions

Step by step instructions for how to make whipped sweet potatoes:

Cut sweet potatoes into small cubes. 

Place in a large pot and cover with water. Boil until sweet potato is soft and fork tender. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Drain water from cooked sweet potatoes. Make sure there is no excess water in the pot.

If you prefer to roast sweet potatoes, place them whole on a baking tray and cover with foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 45-60 minutes. 

Time will vary depending on the size of your sweet potatoes. They are ready when you can easily pierce a fork through the flesh. Cut the sweet potatoes in half and carefully scoop out the flesh. 

Start whipping sweet potatoes with a handheld beater, or use a stand mixer. You can also use a potato masher to help break down the cooked sweet potatoes first before whipping.

Add maple syrup, melted butter and cream. Mix in with sweet potatoes.

Season whipped sweet potatoes with nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and pepper.

Continue to whip until your desired consistency. 

Optional to serve with chopped chives and candied walnuts on top. 

How to Make This Recipe Perfectly (Expert Tips)

Cut sweet potatoes into smaller sized cubes: This will help the sweet potatoes to be evenly cooked and easier to break down.

Getting the right consistency: I had to break down the sweet potato cubes with a potato masher first and then whisk with a stand mixer. 

You can also use the food processor to whip the sweet potatoes until they have the consistency you like. Unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes do not get gummy when you whisk them in the food processor.

Add more cream: If you find the texture of the sweet potatoes not as fluffy as you like, add a little more heavy cream and whip into sweet potatoes for a few more minutes.

You can also roast sweet potatoes in the oven instead of boiling them if you have more time.  I would not substitute sweet potatoes with yams as the drier texture will be harder to whip. Use vegan butter and non-dairy cream for a vegan recipe Try parsley or sage if you don’t have chives readily available.  Use dark brown sugar as a substitute for maple syrup. Add a little more heavy cream and whip into sweet potatoes for a few more minutes for extra fluffy texture.
