The Shangri-La Hotel Singapore is the flagship and first hotel of the luxury chain.

Name

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore

Location

Set on 15 acres of greenery, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore is situated at the western end of Orchard Road.

Due to it’s secluded location, it takes roughly 20 minutes on foot to reach the middle of Orchard Road and 15 minutes to the nearest MRT station. Fortunately, the hotel does provide complimentary shuttle buses to Orchard Road and the CBD area.

Room

Due to the hotel’s sheer size, there’s 3 separate wings: Tower, Garden and Valley. Each wing has a distinct style, with the Valley Wing being the most exclusive.

I was assigned the Deluxe Pool View Room in the Garden Wing. The room measured 50 square metres and centered around an over-sized king bed. I would describe the room’s decor as clean and modern with wooden accents throughout.

Beside the bed was a casual living area with a comfortable sofa and a practical coffee desk.

Along the wall was a flat screen TV, another table and a counter area for luggage.

On top of a marble counter were 4 complimentary bottles of water, which were replenished daily. Also on the counter was a black Nespresso coffee machine with 6 capsules.

Beside the water bottles was a welcome amenity consisting of fruit and a box of Shangri-La branded chocolate.

Underneath the marble counter was the mini bar, that was thoroughly stocked with the largest variety of drinks I’ve seen.

Several kinds of snacks and mini spirit bottles could be found in the drawers above, as well as glassware, instant coffee and tea bags.

The spacious bathroom was luxuriously decked out in marble and featured a double vanity, a deep bathtub and an enclosed shower.

Bathroom amenities were provided in Shangri-La’s trademark jade green bottles. The usual toiletries were placed in a wooden tray on top of the vanity.

As the room’s name implies, you can catch a lush view of pool from the balcony.

Facilities

One of the highlights of the hotel is the expansive outdoor pool. Relaxing on the loungers next to the pool was the ideal way to spend a balmy Singapore afternoon.

For guests who are more active, there’s a well equipped health club that includes:

Make sure to pop by the Waterfall Garden which has a tranquil koi pond – it’s the perfect place for Instagram photos!

Families with young children can head to Buds – an interactive play space that has an array of activities including baking lessons.

Food

With 11 restaurants and bars, guests staying at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore will have no problems finding the right meal for them. As I was staying at the hotel for business, I only had time to sample the breakfast at The Line.

The breakfast buffet runs from 6:00 am – 10.30 am during weekdays and till 11am on the weekends.

As expected, most traditional breakfast items were being served such as eggs, bacon, sausages, cereal, toast, fruit and yoghurt. More unique offerings included congee, laksa, roti and soup noodles. What really caught my eye was the wall of sweet pastries!

After a thorough look of the entire buffet spread, I settled for the omelette, a plate of sweet pastries and some fruit. I also had some orange juice and teh tarik to wash it all down.

Service

After finding the Garden Wing entrance, I was directed to the check in desk. The staff member was very cordial and offered me a cool hand towel as soon as I sat down.

Once all the formalities were completed, she personally walked me to my room with my luggage in tow and briefly showed me around the room.

All of the staff I encountered at the Line restaurant, the pool and in the lobby greeted me warmly and were helpful when I needed any assistance.

Small Details

As I was settling in to my room, I noticed there was a menu which listed several types of tea that guests could have delivered as part of the welcome process. I opted for the Jasmine tea, which was promptly brought up by housekeeping in a ornate box.

Verdict

Shangri-La Singapore is the crown jewel of the luxury hotel chain thanks to the warm hospitality, solid rooms and varied facilities.

This review was based on a stay paid for my company at the time.
