1.LAU PA SAT

Lau Pa Sat is located fairly close to Marina Bay Sands, you can take the MRT to Raffles Place, check out the Merlion and walk to Lau Pa Sat (Approximately 15mins walk).

I personally feel that Lau Pa Sat is a food centre targeted at white collar workers in the offices nearby, therefore prices here are a little bit higher than some of the other food centres (by that I mean a dollar or two). There's a wide range of stalls and the adjacent street get blocked off to become "Satay Street" opens from 7pm till late.

Address
18 Raffles Quay
Singapore 048582

RECOMMENDED AT LAU PA SAT:

Fish Congee - congee is apparently a big part of Singaporean lifestyle. There's also frog congee!

Fish Ball Soup and Laksa- at $3.5 per bowl, you'll get a taste of authenticity alright!

Fried Kway Teow - another popular dish in Singapore

And of course....Satay!!

2.RASAPURA

Rasapura is located within Marina Bay Sands, I wouldn't be surprised that MBS owns the place either. The only reason this place is on my list is to make sure that YOU DO NOT GO THERE. After 5 days of Hawker food, Rasapura was a complete let down. The food is overpriced and significantly below average in terms of taste.

3.TIONG BAHRU FOOD CENTRE

We made the mistake of going to Tiong Bahru food centre a little later at night, most stalls were closed or closing around 7:30pm. There are some old housing estates around Tiong Bahru if you are interested. Food here is cheap and delicious, with a variety of different stalls to choose from.

Address
30 Seng Poh Road,
Singapore 168898
10-15 min walk from Tiong Bahru MRT

RECOMMENDED DISHES

Chwee Kueh from Jian Bo is a must, $2 for 5 (you'll want more). These are little "steam cakes" (more like jelly) made from rice flour, topped with what I believe to be fried onion. nomnomnom

Shaved ice and Taro desserts were ridiculously cheap here. We got durian shaved ice and taro with sweet potato and coconut milk. Extremely satisfying. $3.5 for both.

Fried Oysters $4 - this stuff is amazing and I'm not that big on oysters. A very reasonable amount of oysters for 4 bucks!

4.ADAM ROAD HAWKER'S MARKET

We were recommended to visit Adam Road Hawker's Market for "the best biryani and curry", we were disappointed. There was barely any... it was mainly Malaysian and deep fried food. If you are on a tight schedule, you can probably give this place a miss.

Address:
2 Adam Rd,
Singapore 289876

Sting Ray - We were listening to local radio in a taxi and the radio presenter recommended a tourist to try Sting Ray. It's not everyday that you get to eat sting ray, especially not in Australia. This was actually really yummy, not the most meaty fish and has a lot of bones but it really soaks up the flavour.

Teh Halia - It's like a milk tea with spiced ginger. It is absolutely amazing. I'm sure they sell this in other markets too. Highly recommended.

5.MELLBEN SEAFOOD

This is not a hawker's market but I feel the need to mention this place.

The first thing I asked the hotel reception is where to find the best chilli crab in Singapore. I enquired about Jumbo Seafood restaurant as that was the only restaurant I am familiar with from word of mouth and Instagram. The hotel reception was a local and recommended me to stay away from Jumbo - he said it's a tourist trap where prices are hiked up exponentially. Jumbo also offers waterfront views so that's another element of allure.

Instead he recommended Mellben Seafood Restaurant, apparently that's where the local's go. We got our hands dirty and had an amazing meal, it did cost a pretty penny and an ugly one. Well worth it though.

MAXWELL FOOD CENTRE

Maxwell is hands down my favourite out of all food centres. It's located within a walking distance from Chinatown and has a huge amount of stalls and variety on premises.

Address:
1 Kadayanallur St,
Singapore 069184

RECOMMENDED:

Drinks are ridiculously cheap, as well as fruit plates. You get to pick your own fruits and everything is sliced!

The best and most succulent Haianese chicken I have ever tried in my life. You will find this at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Stall. $12 for half a chicken and 75c for a bowl of chicken rice.

Singaporean pancake, this is what it looks like and it is delicious. We got ours with peanut fillings.

Carrot cake - it's a savoury dish. I initially thought it was an actual cake. But it's like rice noodles. Make sure you have this in hawker markets, they fry everything in woks and it tastes significantly different to food courts.

7.LITTLE INDIA

Little India was interesting. As a lover of Indian food we wouldn't have missed this. It's located within a short walk from Little India MRT. Like Maxwell, a large amount of stalls and a lot of authentic indian food.

Head over to Allauddin's for the best Briyani. The chicken biryani is recommended but since one of us doesn't eat meat we got fish biryani. The fish was quite tough but the flavours were amazing. At $5 a set it's worth your while.

Walking through Little India as a tourist was quite an experience.
