What Is An AWTS?

AWTS (Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems) are self-contained wastewater (sewage) treatment systems.

AWTS stands for Aerated Wastewater Treatment System and is a wastewater treatment system that treats and processes wastewater from households or small-scale commercial properties. Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems use the process of aeration followed by clarification to achieve biological treatment of wastewater. AWTS are typically used on properties that can’t be connected to the reticulated town sewer system.

AWTS receives and treats all household wastewater from the following:

toilet bathroom kitchen laundry
Septic Tank, AWTS, Advanced STS Wastewater Cycle

THE AWTS PROCESS

The treatment process in an AWTS involves the influent entering the primary chamber via the source, whereby scum and solids capable of settling are separated from the raw influent. Primary treated effluent flows through a transfer port to the aeration tank. This tank also acts as a storage chamber for sludge returned via the Clarification Chamber.

The primary treated effluent water enters the aeration chamber via the primary chamber. Air is introduced into this chamber via an air blower to create an environment for aerobic bacteria and other helpful organisms to consume the organic matter. The aeration tank helps prevent short-circuiting of the wastewater to ensure extended aeration. Media is also present in the tank to support the growth of bacteria.

After leaving the aeration chamber, the effluent enters the clarification chamber, essentially a quiescent/dormant zone where suspended particles/solids are settled out of the water. These particles are returned to the septic/primary or aeration chambers via a sludge return, which aids in further biological reduction, de-nitrification, and a constant food supply rich in microbes supporting the system through periods of limited flows.

Finally, disinfection is achieved via low doses of chlorine to kill off any remaining harmful organisms. This process is achieved through an automatic chlorinator with sufficient doses to last between maintenance visits.

AWTS comprises multiple treatment stages, including primary settling, aeration, clarification, and disinfection. An AWTS mainly aims to treat wastewater by breaking down organic matter and reducing harmful contaminants before the treated water is discharged into the environment or dispersed via subsurface irrigation.

AWTS systems vary in design and size, and their capacity depends on factors such as the number of users, property size, and local regulations. It’s crucial to comply with relevant regulatory requirements and ensure proper maintenance and monitoring of the system to ensure its efficient operation and environmental sustainability.

Determining the ideal septic tank size can be challenging since every situation is unique. However, as a general guideline based on AS/NZS 1546.1:2008, a house with 4-6 bedrooms should have a minimum tank size of 4,500L if the wastewater production is considered ‘regular’. It’s important to note that this is a guideline only. We recommend consulting with local wastewater specialists for personalised assistance who can provide expert advice tailored to your specific needs and ensure your septic system’s proper sizing and functioning.

Sometimes, an Advanced STS, not an AWTS, is required. For more details, please refer to the NSW EPA’s policies, guidelines and programs

The treated effluent from domestic wastewater treatment systems should not be used for human consumption or to irrigate vegetables or fruit, and the irrigation area should not be used for recreational purposes

Considerations When Choosing a Septic System

We highly recommend reading our Septic Tank Buying Guide, which covers all the primary considerations. Such as:
