When building designer Matt Bradley from Matt Bradley Designs was searching for someone to build his house, he looked no further than award-winning builders Surfside Homes.
He wanted a dwelling on a small block that felt not only spacious, but luxurious. With sustainability in mind, he designed a house with his trademark unique details that also sat nicely on a 186sqm block.
“These days, blocks of land are getting smaller, so it was a huge achievement to build a house that had all the features it needs on such a small block,” says builder Brett McManus of Surfside Homes. “We were honoured that Matt asked us to be involved in the project.”
After working with Matt for several years, it was a breeze for Surfside Homes to build alongside one of their favourite designers. The style Matt chose for his Margate house was modern minimalism, and this can be seen in the quirky features throughout the build, such as the circle design on its beautiful facade.
“It’s definitely a house that stands out from the rest,” says Brett. “Circles play a huge part in the design, inside and out, and there’s also the use of blue as a feature colour that is consistent throughout the home. “It’s affectionately named ‘moon house’ for the amazing light feature on the front balcony that mimics the moon in the most perfect way.”
Matt wanted to fit as much on the block as possible and the style, finishes and quality of the property achieve this and more. The entryway void, complete with cargo netting, LED lights and black billowing fabric, creates a glorious ‘night sky’ and provides more seating in what would usually be empty space.
Vinyl plank flooring stretches casually throughout the home, and in each bedroom, striking VJ panelling is used beautifully as a feature. As elegant as it is, building this petite abode came with significant challenges for Surfside Homes. Accessibility was limited as surrounding streets were narrow, and a tight frontage made deliveries and material storage tricky.
To add to the drama, the neighbours decided to build at the same time, causing havoc with trades and communication. And, as with many builds, COVID-19 lockdowns caused delays. However, this didn’t stop the Sunshine Coast builders from getting it done.“From first seeing the plans to standing out the front looking at the finished house, it was an awesome process to be involved in,” says Brett. “With the challenges we faced – narrow streets, parking issues, supply shortages, price increases and all the rest – we managed to build a stunning quality home that turns heads.”
