Here is a simple apple and raspberry crumble recipe that you can make with your children. Ideal for when you want to whip up a quick and easy dessert at home.
One of my favourite recipes of all time has to be a piping hot apple crumble. Would you agree? The crunch, the buttery deliciousness, the hot apple.
A simple apple crumble is mouthwatering and a family favourite.
This is a simple recipe that you’ll want to have on hand.
It’s great because you can get your children involved too. As I’ve said many times, children learn so many great skills while cooking with you in the kitchen.
To make this recipe you’ll need –
6 – 8 granny smith apples (pealed and cored)10 or so fresh raspberries1/2 caster sugar2 tbsp lemon juicewater 1/2 cup1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional) 1/2 tsp nutmeg (optional) 1 1/2 cup plain-all purpose flour3/4 cups brown sugar1 cup oats225g softened butterBegin by preheating your oven to 180c (350f).
Peal all of your apples and discard core and apple skin.
Cut your apples into same size pieces.
Including Math in your cooking experience
If you’re making this recipe with your children, you might like to start a conversation about fractions or parts of a whole.
When cooking with younger children, you might like to talk about size and use various language, which we can use to describe the size of an object.
“This apple piece is larger than this one…”, for example.
Place in a pot the apple, water, lemon juice and caster sugar.
Continually stir the mixture until well combined and the apples are soft.
Transfer to a 1.5 litre oven-proof dish.
Scatter your raspberries and set aside. Yum!
Now to make the delicious crumble to go on top.
In a large bowl, mix together your flour, oats and brown sugar.
Your child will have great fun combining so many ingredients.
Add your softened butter to your dry mix and using very clean hands, rub it through until well combined.
It should resemble sand like consistency that is slightly moist.
Sprinkle your crumbly mixture over your apple and raspberries.
You’re almost there!
Cover the fruit completely with the mixture.
Add to bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes or until the crumble is golden.
It’s a good idea to wait 2 minutes after your apple and raspberry crumble comes out of the oven as it will help set the crunchy crumble.
Your house will smell amazing with the combination of the fruit and crumble.
Use a large spoon to scoop out your fresh apple crumble from the dish.
Dollop on a decent scoop of vanilla ice cream and serve.
I know my children both really love making (and eating) this crunchy apple and raspberry dessert. It really is very simple to make and delicious.
