Simple and fun is this beautiful coffee filter butterfly craft for kids. They are quite easy to make and use only a few materials too, so it�s hard to stop at making one.
How to make coffee filter butterflies
You might remember a few years ago Possum and I made cellophane dragonflies. They were lots of fun and have since had a special coffee filter butterfly craft for kids.
The bonus with these beautiful coffee filter butterflies is that you really only need a few simple materials to make them.
Don�t you just love when you find a craft that�s fun and also easy to prepare?
To make these beautiful coffee filter butterflies, you�ll need to gather the following.
Supplies:
Regular white coffee filters (you will need two filters for each butterfly)
Neon food coloring
Spray bottles filled with water (I used mini spray bottles)
Tray (I used a circle shaped tray for this activity)
Pipe cleaners (cut in half)
Scissors
Paper plates (for drying)
Add 5-10 drops of food coloring into each spray bottle, using a different color for each bottle.
Set one coffee filter into the tray.
Spray the coffee filter with colored water until the filter is completely covered in color.
Place the wet coffee filter on a paper plate and set aside to dry.
We set our coffee filters in a warm spot near a window for quick drying.
For even faster drying, set outside in a warm location, but make sure they are protected from the elements: wind, rain, etc.
Repeat these steps for the remainder of butterflies that you�d like to make, keeping in mind that it takes two coffee filters for each butterfly.
Once they are completely dry, you can start making your butterflies.
How to make butterflies with coffee filters
Choose two coffee filters you wish to combine to make one butterfly.
Next, pinch and gather the middle of each filter, as shown above.
Bring the two coffee filters together to create the butterfly wings.
One filter is use for the top butterfly wings, the other filter is used for the bottom wings.
Take a pipe cleaner and fold it in half.
This will be for the butterfly�s antenna.
Place the pipe cleaner around the center of the wings. Twist tightly to hold the wings securely together.
Trim the pipe cleaner ends to make a suitable length for a butterfly�s antenna.
Go about making as many coffee filter butterflies as you like!
These coffee filter butterfly craft for kids make a gorgeous display. You can add them to a wall or use fishing line to hang them from a ceiling.
