Christmas – What To Photograph?

Around this time of year people tend to be winding down and we are often asked , what is there to photograph? When you are out and about, you should have your camera with you just incase something grabs your eye. Most photographers do have their camera with them. You just don’t know what you might come across.

One of the things that we have done over the years is to be on the look out for ‘ Father Christmas ‘ What do I mean by that? It’s a  long way to the North Pole. What is interesting at this time of the year , many people go to great lengths to present the Man in Red in so many creative ways. Over the years we have looked forward to this time of year to see how many creative ways the Man in Red is presented.

This not only includes the Man in Red, but also many of his helpers.

It is a great challenge photographically  and you’ll be amazed  at the collection of the wonderful acts of creativity by people you’ll capture. There are so many wonderful examples to be discovered out there.

The biggest Santa that we have seen is Map the Miner, also known as Map Kernow .He is a 7-metre statue commemorating the Cornish mining history of the town of Kapunda in South Australia. Keep in mind that this is 7 metres tall and the thought of making his outfit is mind blowing and then actually fitting it would also be a challenge. These are the lengths that communities go in getting into the Christmas spirit. It gives you a wonderful opportunity to explore the lengths of your photography to capture these awesome acts of creativity.

I’ve been told that most years they dress the Miner up so if you live in Adelaide, you still have a chance to take his picture before they derobe him.

Remember it is still about light and composition. The good thing about photographing them, they are not going to move and you have a captive subject. No excuses saying that your sujected move at the wrong time ?

Father Christmas and his helpers are clearly different each year and that is why it is good to hop in the car and simply go for a random drive and see where it takes you in your pursuit of the Man in Red and his helpers.

One of our favourites has to be this example of the Grinch.

What I love about this picture of Vicki taking The Grinch’s picture, is that it actually looks like he is posing for the picture. He looks so real and by far, this is our favourite at this point in time.

Go for that drive with no time limits and just see what you come across. The lengths that people go to is fantastic and just shows how creative people are.For those who create these wonderful make overs, keep the great work up and keep creating The Man in Red and his helpers. This subject is a photographers paradise in the creative area and does bring joy to so many.
